10" Table saw for under $1500
Hi all,
First time post, long time lurker..
I know this has been done to death but thought rather than resurrecting an old thread, I'd start a new fresh one.
I'm looking for a table saw under $1500. I've had a second hand 10" sliding saw for 2 years now, but unfortunately, it is plagued with 2 issues I have been unable to resolve.
1. Blade height adjustment is horribly stiff. It's got a crappy worm gear that just constantly binds. I replaced the plastic threaded sheath with a steel one, but still bad.
2. Arbor wobble.
After spending too many hours trying to fix both issues, I've decided it's time to count my losses and upgrade. It's been a fun learning experience and the machine has been useful, but I desire more accuracy.
I'm in Perth, so options are quite limited. And second hand market is virtually dead here for decent saws.
I'm looking at contractor type saws as space is limited in garage. Both the saws below have in-cabinet motors, so atleast it's not the traditional contractor style saw with motor out back.
There are 2 options I'm considering:
1. Sherwood 10" contractor saw @ $1199
http://www.timbecon.com.au/sawing/ta...ontractors-saw
2. Rikon 10-201 contractor saw @ $ unknown as yet
RIKON Power Tools
The Sherwood is essentially a Ridgid R4512 rebadge. The Ridgid has been around for a while now. Get's decent reviews in the states, but can be had for around US$600 in the states. At that price, it's a no-brainer.
Earlier models were plagued with a shifting blade during height adjustment, but newer ones have been fine.
The Rikon is sold in the states under the Rikon brand, and also the Steel City brand as the 35990C. It's sold there for around US$800.
It has cabinet mounted trunions, and cast iron side wings versus the table mounted trunions and stamped steel wings of the Sherwood.
It also has a t-square/biesemeyer style fence system versus the aluminum molded extrusion of the Sherwood.
I'm waiting on Beyond Tools to get back to me regarding a price on the Rikon (I'm hoping it will be no more than $1500). They are going to be the only reseller/distributor selling them in AU from what I can gather.
On paper the Rikon seems the better saw, but was wondering if I could get an opinion from those with more experience than myself.
I know both saws have a slit front rail design, but atleast with the Rikon, if it gets annoying I can replace the front rail with one piece of steel rectangular tubing.
My budget is pretty fixed. MOF won't allow me to spend anymore - even if I did have the extra cash!
Appreciate the assistance

Can't comment on either of those saws but there is also a Carbatec store in perth you could go check out they have a few saws that are in your price range. Not sure on other suppliers in perth. Good luck. I will say though that if you buy a nicer unit, you'll forget the price after a while once you are smiling ear to ear. Hopefully the missus can be convinced.

Thanks for the reply mate.
Unfortunately, the saws at Carbatec in this price range just don't seem to match up to the two listed in my first post.
The contractor saw doesn't have a decent splitter/riving knife. It's also a very old design - not necessarily a bad thing, but for $1200 I'd be expecting a little better design.
I've sent off an email to Baileigh for a price on their 1040e-30 shipped here, so will see what they come back with.
I've previously enquired with Beyond Tools regarding the Laguna Fusion, but they wanted to charge the $300 odd for shipping (for them getting the saw from over east). Not sure why they can't just get a shipment from China direct. Seems a bit counter intuitive. Whether this has changed, I'll have to check.

The Rikon is priced at $1669 which is the upper end of my budget, but doable. Beyond tools is getting a shipment in a few weeks so I'll be able to take a look at it then.
Timbecon has released two new saws.

They look and feel solidly built, but I do have one concern...
the drive belt is inside the dust shroud. I've never seen a design like this before. I'd be worried that the drive shafts could get dust/muck wrapped around them and possible cause the belt to slip off or be damaged. Not to mention a decent piece of wood could get lodged in there.

what do you all think? Besides this issue, it's a good looking and well built saw.

Also, the 10" contractor saw from Timbecon is now $1079 which is tempting.

Shame there has been little response to this thread and that there is very little on the forum regarding these Sherwood Table saws.
I'm on the hunt for a table saw myself - trying to decide whether to wait for something decent to come up 2nd hand, get a new hybrid job like the Sherwood or splurge and get a Harvey/Laguna Cabinet Saw. I would love a cabinet saw, but I am not sure if i can justify the outlay to get one. Shame there is little information around about the Sherwood saws, and that there is nowhere in Brisbane to take a look at them.
For just over a grand (and half the price of the cabinet saws) - that Sherwood hybrid contractor saw (http://www.timbecon.com.au/sawing/ta...ontractors-saw) is pretty tempting and with a few minor adjustments would probably meet all of my weekend warrior needs!!!

I read somewhere that the Sherwood contractor saw is a re-badged Rigid 4512, or an older version of that. I'm not sure if it has a rise and fall riving knife which the Rigid does. It looks to be quite full of features. I think those who are interested should check it out and let us know.

So Noons - Did you actually inspect one of these Sherwood Contractor saw's at Timbecon? What were you thoughts on manufacture quality and features?
Are you any closer to a decision on which saw will get your hard earned $$$$?

Yeh, I've been in a couple of times now to inspect.
Quality of finish on all the units I saw are great. No problem there.
The contractor saw is well built and for $1079 I'm extremely tempted. My only concern is the fence. I'm not a big fan of aluminium front rails.
The one on display is not setup 100% correctly so there is a little slop when the fence is locked down. But I know from reading about the Ridgid version that once it's locked down it's very solid.
i would have pulled the trigger on their new hybrid saw but the drive belt being inside the dust shroud worries me.
i was hoping that someone with more experience on the forums would be able to shed some light on this particular design..
I'm conflicted! I don't want to be disappointed in whatever I purchase. Essentially I'd love a Harvey, but shipping costs put it far out of my price range.
So to answer.. I'm no closer!

I inquired about the Sherwood here late last year, some of the responses may be helpful?

Thanks Jone5y.
Are you sure it's the same one though? The one I mentioned was only just be released a week ago. There was another one (that pointed to the same URL as mentioned in your thread) which they no longer sell.
It was manufactured in China, whereas the new one is from Taiwan.
edit: from looking at archive.org the hybrid saw you were looking at was called TBHL-254 whereas the new one is called TS-250-HL.

Yes, I see now, sorry bout that, i had the wrong saw in mind. The new ones sure look the goods, especially when compared to the usual suspects and how they've suffered from the poor exchange rate. Could almost live with that awful orange frame for the value they appear to offer

Haha yeah, the colour isn't great!
Anyone able to make a comment on the trunnion design of the new Sherwood hybrid? especially the drive belt inside the dust shroud?
Could this be dangerous or, could the belt be damaged by saw dust?
