Bad things about table saw sliding table extension
Hi WWF,
I was considering adding a sliding table to my Harvey table saw and was wondering if there were any downside of the upgrade that people have come across?

Does the lack of response mean this upgrade is nothing short of epic?

I've got the triton maxi sliding table extension. Definitely comes in handy. I know nothing about the Harvey, but if you are looking to cut larger things, I'd say go for it.

Hi Damienol.
If you're asking if a slider is a good idea, it seems it is. I posted a thread about mine here and people were chiming in with their thoughts which were mainly positive. It seems that there is a bit of a mind set to over come but worth the effort. I've decided to not use mine because I believe it is substandard unit with plastic runners. Have a look at Derek's set up which is on roller bearings.

In my case, I decided to be self employed doing Carpentry as well Cabinet Making (I ran a kitchen cupboard workshop 8 years previously). I had a "hobby" bench saw which would not be good enough for what I wanted. I bought a Jet Contractor Saw with solid cast iron tables. Using a CMT 10" blade I could get pretty good results. Being a one man band and having used sliding saws for 16 years I wanted a slider on my set up. Being on a budget, I hunted around and modeled my own slider on the Triton set up.It worked very well because it supported the sheet's weight as I pushed 24 X 12 sheets of 16mm board through the saw on my own
My health (bad) made me have to give work away altogether. I was still pottering about in my shed when I was able too. Anyway I was Ebaying and came across an SCM Panel Saw with 45° right hand tilt, 300-450 Blade capacity and slider. $650. I had to drive to Sydney to pick it up.
It is set up in my workshop along side of the Jet. Each saw does something slightly different to the other.
OK are sliders a good thing....you betcha. To single highhandedly hold up and try cutting a 24 X 12 sheet of board safely and accurately it is a mustJust do it!
Kind regards Rod

At the price of that slider accessory, if I was to upgrade my table saw to a Harvey (it has crossed my mind), it would be advantageous to refit it with my current slider. If it can be done. I could not be without a slider. It takes the place of a CMS, and does all kinds of crosscuts, large and small. However, the Harvey slider looks quite under whelming. My old slider is constructed in steel. It is substantial and solid. The cast iron top runs smoothly on steel wheels with real bearings. The chances of purchasing a slider like this is small - what about making your own. It is not complicated. I am happy to post pictures if you need.

Given all of above and some thinking and measuring I did in the mancave today I think one of these will be my next purchase. I just need to find the right one at the right price point.
When I originally got my Harvey I bought it with 30" rails and then later upgraded to 50". The later extension meant that I was short 20" on the blanking plate. I am now wondering if there is an easy way to attach the soon the be defunked cast iron top to the other wing to reduce the viod by another 10"?
