Default Biesemeyer Style Table Saw Fence - all aluminium

I am wanting to try and build a Biesemeyer Style fence to go on home made table saw top. However I would prefer to doge the weight of steel. Therefore I was considering it in aluminum.

The clamping mechanism may prove too much for alloy over time, which would not be good.

Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on using alloy in such circumstances?

aluminium might flex..by the time you stiffen it up the weight might come close to the original weight... it all depends what you will be cutting.. I had to upgrade original aluminium fence to a biesemeyer style one on my old saw due to the fact that every time when I ripped ply sheet whole thing moved and flexed from the pressure.. pressure being caused by me either pushing the ply sheet against the fence while putting it on (hitting the fence with the sheet) or simple as i was pushing it to cut it. Excessive pressure was simply caused by the leverage when handling the sheet...
Original fence was good for small pieces you can handle easy (lets say plank of wood being 1000mm long by 200mm wide being cross cut.. for any serious cut.. biesemeyer fence has proven to be well spent money... precision, lack of flex and movement..

Thanks for thoughts. I don't tend to cut big sheets well at least with saw in original size.
I was thinking alloy for whole construct including guide rails to minimise the weight to front (counter benchtop) hence concern about pressure. I certainly do not want to do big steel angle and tube for rail guides.

Maybe smaller steel sections or back to timber.

Hi Super. Here is where i got my idea for my table saw fence. http://lumberjocks.com/Hutch/blog/2740 All parts from 80/20 inc (their Aus distributor). Works well. Once locked into position it has no flex left or right and I can adjust it easily to make sure it is parallel to the blade. And being T slot extrusion I can easily make up jigs that connect into the extrusion slots on the fence which is handy. Have also added a piece of formply on the right where the rail continues off of the table to give me extra ripping width. If you want more info feel free to PM me.

And carbatec sell a fence and rail kit but they were out of stock last time I checked and was told Oct / Nov at the earliest not sure if this has changed or not.

Can't upload pics of mine, not sure why.

    Cheers,

Yes basically exactly the same but I only went with a front rail and a front linear bearing. Didn't do one at the back too. I can email you photos as I can't upload them here for some reason.

Thanks Rhys, I've found the 80/20 site and am investigating. How much did your setup cost?

I was having problems uploading pics to this forum and it turned out that they were too big and needed to be compressed. I downloaded iResize (free) and resize all my pics before posting. The folks over at Forum & Members Help are very helpful if this isn't the problem.

Cheers Twisted i've sent the 'contact us' an email too. The pics were only 400kb or there abouts so I just presumed size wasn't the issue. All up was $345 so not cheap. The Carbatec table saw fence and rail kit is back in Stock I have seen it yesterday. I have heard good things, it is biesemeyer style too.

Thanks Rhys I will PM you latter. I had seen the unit you did. I already have the profile for the actual fence which is an 80x40 profile. The guide rails and attachment for me are the challenge.

I've replied to your PM. But now the Carbatec fence is back in stock you may find that suits your needs. But if you want to go with the extrusion still seeing as you have the 80x40 already you should be able to make this work.

Well that's looking good! Nice saw.
The Carbatec will be easy to install on that table I reckon. And is the style of fence system you are after. Now if you want to go down the 80/20 route, you will have to come up with a way to attach the 40x40 to the table saw and make it level. For me it was easy because the table saw top had a lip on the end so I could drill holes in it and mount the 40x40 just with some fasteners from 80/20 and bolts. If you do it like the guy did on the lumberjocks post I think it would work well.

Centron I already purchased the extrusion to do the fence. However, having said that what is it you have? The fence from a Saw Stop contractor saw and where I need to construct the rail mechanism?
