Default Blade alignment - what tolerance?

    Hi all,
Just doing a bit of saw maintenance today, and testing squareness of blade to mitre slot. Using a dial indicator mounted on a plate which has a runner in my mitre slot ( with zero play ), I am getting .04 to .05mm which I think is a little over 1.5 thou. My thinking is this is pretty good, but wondered what others might think?

It's a contractor style saw, so i'd have to loosen the trunnions and start tapping away with a mallet and peice of wood, so am wondering if I risk possibly making it worse?

Well if its not then we are both in trouble because I did mine last month and the readings were pretty much the same as for yours.

this is my one, H & F SB12 https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/W452 although it now has a different base and fence.

    Cheers

No doubt from the same taiwanese/chinese factory.

I have had mine a few years and I am pleased with its accuracy.

I am mounting mine on a plywood box base to improve stability and add some better dust extraction as well as adding a bit of ballast to the bottom. I use an incra fence on it.

Did you have any trouble getting the cast iron wings to sit flat?

    Hi Doug,
Yeah, the wings aren't perfectly flat on mine, and I think I'm about to embark on a similar project to build something that might turn this into more of a cabinet saw.

Agree, it's a pretty good saw for the money

The wings on mine would angle upwards and were a pain to adjust with shims so I bored and tapped holes for grub-screws about a third of the way in from both ends near the top of the wings. Now they are able to be adjusted very quickly and easily. Hope that is understandable.

That's exactly the same as mine. I have found it to be quite a good saw with enough power to do all I ask of it.
The wings were slightly out when I attached them but I only needed to push on the outside edge and lock up the screws where the fence rails attach to them and they stayed flat.
One thing I did do with mine was add extra bolts where the legs attach to the cabinet (shown by the red dots in the picture). With the single bolt design they come with, the legs will pivot if you push or pull on the table.

The other problem I found was aligning the riving knife with the blade. Adjusting the grubscrews and then fitting the knife back in and tightening was a pain as it needed to be done several times to get it right. What I ended up doing with mine was drill 4 holes through it in line with the grubscrews which took away the need to remove the knife to adjust them. Much easier.
