    Default Saw Blade Wobble

    Hi All,

Wondering if anyone knows what would cause this wobble in my saw blade.
To me it seems like the arbor must be bent a little bit.. or the two small plates that hold onto the blade may be slightly not flat..

I could not see anyway to attach a video so I drop boxed it..

11 second video shows the blade with about half a mm wobble side to side as it turns.

It's an old Startrite table saw I borrowed from my uncle.

Further to knowing what's causing it, any ideas on how or if it could be fixed?

    Cheers,
    Mike

You sure can correct this, right down to nothing and its pretty easy.

There is a video by Mathias Wendell on exactly this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXFRsmB0_Ec

Genius! That is so simple I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Thanks a lot for that. [emoji3]

    Hi Woodman
Just before you go about machining the arbor please check that the blade itself is not twisted ... If the blade ever got stuck in wood it can warp.. like I did when cutting a bowed piece that jammed between the fence sand the blade ..

To test the blade for flatness just do the same as you did in the video ... mark the place where the blade drifts out .... then mark the spot with whiteout (or equivalent) on the blade and the arbour .... loosen the blade and rotate 180 degrees. If the blade now runs out at the same spot as the mark on the arbour ... then its the arbor. If the blade runs out at the same place as the mark on the blade then its the blade.

It's best to use a dial indicator if you have one. I would definitely not try to grind the arbor without the use of a dial indicator.

Interested in what you find out.

    Regards

    Rob

Thanks Rob, it's not the blade. I initially thought it was some time ago as the blade it had on it when I picked it up 5 years back was old and rusty. I replaced it with a Forrest WW when I was on holiday in the states. Same issue as soon as it was installed.

I've managed to reduce the wobble by about half now. However what I've discovered over the last week is that the arbor itself, not just the flange is not 90 degrees. I think that's probably not fixable and may be causing the remaining wobble.

It's a bit frustrating as I went to significant effort to make a nice cross cut sled that is exactly square.

As long as the flange is perfectly square it doesn't matter if there is a small wobble in the arbour as long as it is not throwing the saw out of balance.

The arbour will then not be perpendicular to the flange and the worst effect is that as you tighten the blade nut it will pull the flange out of square and this may reintroduce wobble in the blade.

If you get the flange square it may fix your problem without having to replace the whole arbour.
