    Default Gibro Tablesaw/Planer

    Hi all,

Today I scored a Gilbro tables/thicknesser for very cheap, in fact it was free. I person I know has had it for many years and wanted it to go to a good home so he thought of me.

While I mainly reside over in the metalworking forum and are mainly setup for metalwork, I do appreciate woodwork as well although I think I am better at metalwork and have much more capability in that area.

I do have a Triton work centre including the extension table which I do use from time to time and it has served me very well but I have a very soft spot for Australian made tooling.

Anyway I will attach a pic. One question I have for anyone who knows anything about these machines, there is a small table that sits to the side of and below the main saw table. It's inline with the saw blade spindle. Is that part of a sanding disc setup on the side? The table has channels similar to the saw table so that it can take a sliding guide of some description.

You can see that side table on the RHS in the 2nd pic.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Simon

That is a horizontal boring table as used for dowelling or mortising. The end of the saw shaft takes a drill chuck and as you change the height of the saw you adjust the position of the hole.

OK. Thankyou very much Bohdan, there is what appears to be a chuck with drill bit attached. I was trying to work out what that was for.

    Makes sense now.

    Cheers,

It's kind of similar to the Ezycut combo machine I have. My machine has a 1HP motor so I find the saw is a tad under powered. I keep it because the jointer works well. The saw does get used for small work but struggles with thicker cuts.

Thanks John. I just googled your saw table to see what they look like. Yep they are very similar setup. Aussie made too.

Question is, should i sell the triton and keep this? Not enough room for both.

    Simon,
The answer to that is do you have a jointer? I have toyed with the idea of making a small bench and just mounting the jointer and motor as a space saver but I sometimes use the saw to cut tenons and small things. Can be handy having another saw as it can save having to change blades. If you mount the machine on wheels space is less of a problem. Previous owner of mine had that sussed.

Thanks John, yes this saw came mounted on casters too but they are hopelessly undersized for the weight of the saw bench. I will make a frame from angle iron for the saw bench to sit in and put heavy duty casters on that.

    Cheers
