Exclamation Help with screeching noise on startup - JET JPS-10TS

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I am having with a Jet JPS-10TS table saw. I purchased the saw second hand although it had never been used and was still all packed on the shipping crate. It was originally purchased from Carbatec.

The saw has seen less than 10 minutes run time and was working fine in my garage although I moved into another work space and when I setup the saw again in the new space I noticed a loud sharp screeching noise that occurs for the first half a second during startup. The saw was transported very carefully so nothing was damaged there.

I inspected the belt and thought it felt quite tight although I will try and inspect it further tonight. Can anyone give any recommendations for things to try for troubleshooting?

There is no noise when the saw slows to a stop after cutting the power although during the blade slowdown the saw makes a loud clunk and then the blade starts to slowdown as if there is something assisting it stopping (it doesn't come to a gentle slow stop although it isn't an aggressive stop either). Can anyone tell me if this normal for the JET table saw?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Depending on how long the belt has not been used it may have dried out and is slipping on startup. This may disappear with a bit of use or if it's a really old belt a new one may be worth considering.

Can't help with the clunk and slowdown but it could be a breaking feature that is not working correctly because of belt slip.

As a test (with the saw unplugged of course) for belt slip you could try to rotate the blade while holding the motor shaft. There should be no slippage.

I agree with Borden's summary about the belt.
Provided the belt is tight enough just running it might clear that screech. If not try a belt grip spray - supercheap Autos have this.

The clunk sounds like it might just be the centrifugal switch cutting back in as the motor slows down.

    Thanks for your advice guys.

Just to update and close this out - I ended up buying a power twist v belt and replaced the old one tonight. What a difference that made! No more screech and the sound overall has reduced considerably. I'm assuming the belt was quite warped from sitting for almost 2 years unused.
