Default Jet 10" Proshop Table Saw - 2nd hand pricing

    Hi Guys,

So found an online ad for a 2nd hand, 8yr old Jet 10" Proshop Table saw.

Quick question - with new ones selling for approx $2200, what do you think would be a reasonable price for this unit considering the age?

Thanks Crowie - I know the new units at Carbatec are $2200 - but what do you think would be a fair price for the unit pictured which is 8yrs old?

The guy definitely didn't pay $2200 8 years ago, so i would think even using current pricing that within the ball park of $500 - $700 would be fair - that's like 8 -10% depreciation per year.

We are not talking about reselling gold bullion here haha

If it's the one on a popular selling site at $1700 there is a fair distance between that and 700
Not familiar with the saw so are the accessories worth anything?

I would say $1700 is well over the mark, particularly when you look at other, better, saws on offer.

My estimate would put it at around $1000. The bracket at $500-700 would make it good buying but I would suspect the seller could get more. The new sawstop seems to be the reason for selling which is good news for the buyer as it may indicate a genuine upgrade and not just selling off a clapped out machine. The rest of the workshop seems to be fairly well equipped.

Agreed there is a large difference in prices - and good luck to the guy for trying to get $1700 - but that asking price is ridiculous in anyone's language!!!!
Fact of life is everything depreciates - people who think their woodworking machines buck the trend are kidding themselves.

I assume the accessories pictured are all stock - as there is no mention of after market upgrades within the ad (saw blades excluded perhaps).
Going on face value alone - the table saw looks in good condition and well looked after. That with the age, i still think you would be crazy to go higher than $800/$900 max (if you were really keen on it).

It's frustrating when advice on this forum is "if you can't afford quality new - buy decent stuff second hand over cheap entry level", and then when something decent comes up people are asking WAY OVER value!

Open to suggestions from other forum members around what price range they think fair for this saw - on face value alone?

I don't think the market works on straight line depreciation that accountants do.
As soon as the gear is off the store, it probably loses 10 ~ 15% of its value, before the 1st anniversary is up, its probably has lost 30 - 40%. Once it has reached 50%, depreciation dosent seems to depend on age but rather wear and tear and availability of new models. But it also appreciates based on inflation. So I'd say its probably 1000 ~ 1100 bucks assuming it is the same model as the current one. 700 bucks would be a bargain and 500 bucks would be a fire sale.

I have the same saw, similar vintage, in better condition than shown in your picture, and I wouldn't be game to ask more than $1000 for it....

Definitely not worth anywhere near $1700 IMHO. Just keep looking, as others will pop up at more realistic prices.

With NO WARRANTY and 8yrs old a general rule of thumb a friend in the tool industry mentioned to me one day was 1/3 the new replacement price so $700 is tops.....

I'm thinking along the following lines:
    $1700 - Wouldn't sell
$1000 - It will take a while to find a buyer but it would likely sell.
$850 - Should sell fairly quickly.
$600 - Should be gone in a day or two.

If the seller isn't to fussed they may keep the price high and just wait for the right person to come by. Second hand machines pop up at good prices every now and again. You just have to be patient and hope they pop up near you.

Yeah i will just keep waiting - shame as he was like 5mins from me.

Keep waiting long enough - and I will have probably saved enough for a new one anyways -

These days, JET are very over-priced for what they are - Chinese made machinery with no better QA than many of the other Chinese machines being brought in under various brand names. Can't see how JET can sell the ProShop (not even a proper enclosed cabinet saw....and the dust collection is lousy) for that kind of money new. Don't believe that JET support or stock of spares in-country is a selling point either, because in my experience both are sadly lacking. In the past 5 years or so several other people have started sourcing the same or better saws direct from China without the JET price premium, e.g. Gary Pye and others. Even Major Woodworking here in Sydney started bringing in Harvey stuff themselves rather than trying to sell at JET prices.

There should be a few used versions of these "other name" saws around by now, and since they only cost $1500-1600 new they would be a much better secondhand buy at around $800 or so. Just keep your eyes peeled.

You can buy one of these brand new for about half of the Jet equivalent.

Ummm the rails for the fence does not seem to run full length. I'm guessing that the owner has shifted the rails to the right and added another panel to the right. Whether this bothers you will depend on how you use the saw. I could be wrong as mine has the 52" rails and they run all the way across (I put a router wing in the remaing space). The rails can be unbolted and moved. YMMV.
