Default Jet 10" Supersaw - Boo!

    Hi,

I have a 10" Supersaw (about 4 years old now). I went overseas for 18 months and when i came back noticed that the table to the left of the blade was distorted (about 3mm high in the middle).

I have raised this issue with the supplier several months ago but got no response after several attempts. I eventually sent an email to Jet in the US asking for advice - no answer.

Apart from the fact that i am pretty hacked off about the service (or lack thereof), i would like to get this sorted.

Has anyone had similar issues with Jet TS?

Is is possible to purchase a new table (i have asked this question of the local supplier and the US but no answer).

Is it possible or practical to have the table top machined?

The saw works fine in other respects, but the distortion causes issues when cutting dados and problems with using the sliding table because i have had to raise it to clear the high spopt in the middle, so it is several mm high front and back.

Any advice or feedback would be gratefully accepted.

    thanks

Can't really help you with your tabletop worries. It is however a mtter of concern that a supposedly reputable comapny like Jet does not even answer emails.

I'm sure that one of the reasons people pay extra for Jet equipment over the generic brands is that it is ssuposedly backed by good after sales service and parts.

It seems to be a bit of a trend on the forum recently that people are reporting problems with Jet equipment, at the same time as Jet prices are rsing substantially.

    Welcome to WWF

Intrigued by your find was it that noticeable or had you tried to use it and discovered it that way.??

    How was it stored ??
Was stuff stored on top around the edges had everything been loosened off??

It is a strange one or sure

    Maybe photo showing the defect

I was under the impression Jet was a generic of a good Italian brand maybe it was just one of their products that is.

I have a Jet supersaw about the same age and have had no problems and agree that the aftersales service(or lack of) is not good enough.
If you find that you have to get it fixed yourself then I would think there should be enough thickness in the table to allow machining.
I paid $100 to get a jointer fence flattened a few months ago so I cant see yours being any more.
I hope Jet comes to the party, this is not good PR for them.
    Cheers Steven

I sympathize with you. It must be very frustrating! I hope you can get some help from them eventually.
How did you get JET's email address. I want to contact them but can't find an E, address.
    Thanks...Rob...

You need: Major Woodworking Equipment, 55 Gow St Padstow, NSW 2211

It's worrying to hear about poor back up service on major machinery purchases.

The first thing I'd do is mention this on every forum you can join. Squeaky wheels, grease, etc.

Failing any notice from Jet, I'd have a look at the underside of the table to see what's what. You want to see how the table is mounted to the machine's body. There will be casting webs underneath, and at least four bolts, probably more. If you are lucky there will be a mounting bolt right underneath your bulge, and you will be able to pull it down flush with the rest of the table.

If not, consider (assuming finding enough meat near the problem area, drill and tap (with coarse threads) for a stud underneath. You can then weld in a cross member (with matching hole), and pull down the area.

Having any more than 0.1 mm table bulge here is going to be problems. I thought Jet published some very tight specifications for flatness for this saw(and all their machines?).

WRT to milling the table (or planing or grinding)...this will obviously change the "balance" of the casting, and is no guarantee that it won't warp again later the same day, possibly worse. In fact it makes it more likely. But, if it ends up being your only recourse...

Oh, one more thing: If none of the above works, you can always remove the top, support it over blocks and try to press down the bulge with whatever means are at your disposal. Cast iron can be remarkably elastic, and if its a scrap anyway, maybe worth a shot.

    Good luck

    Greg

Where did you buy it from and any chance for a picture of the problem?

Sorry to hear about the aftersales service you mention.

I am amazed to learn that it is possible to pull a c.i. table down with threaded bolts.
I would have thought that it must crack.

If you look at a JETcatalogue you will see a massive range of machines and accessories and hundreds of retailers listed in the US plus help lines etc. So if you lived in the US you would not have a problem in getting assistance. In Australia the retailers get basic and limited stock direct from Taiwan, and more recently China, and sell it to us. But there is nothing like the same range or level of support.

I have three JET machines and I have been prepared to pay the price for their quality, very good but not excellent (IMHO), but I know that JET here is not the same as JET in the US and that if I have a problem I am dealing with local suppliers not the JET organisation. In fact one machine has failed twice but the retailer was able to fix it with good grace. I had to wait while they found parts etc etc and it was inconvenient but it was fixed. I still keep my fingers crossed that nothing really serious fails because I think I could be in for a long wait.

So this may explain why you did not receive a reply from JET; it may seem strange but you are not their customer. They run a business in the US and a few Aussie retailers go to Asia and buy the machines from their suppliers. They don't deal through JET in the US.

By the way, not getting a reply from a supplier is not restriced to JET, I have tried several times to converse with Leigh jigs because the local supplier can't answer the question but no response. Presumably the opposite applies here, there are local representatives so let them sort it out (but they can't).

In a way this gives a boost for the likes of Carba-Tech who at least take responsibilty for their imported machinery and very good local back up from Roger Giffkins for his jigs (and of course other local suppliers).

And finally to the table problem. The article the retailer sold you is not reasonable fit for purpose for which it was sold so go back again.
