Default Your thoughts on the laguna fusion table saw.

Trying to find a table saw that is not too big and can do dado's?

Sawstop jobsite is an option, but $2000 for a plastic saw is it going to be better than the laguna? I guess the sawstop can be taken outside so no need for dust extractor and space is a factor. But its plastic!

Will the laguna be better for example if using tenon jigs and box joint jigs?

This will be my first table saw so hesitant to buy the likes of a harvey and kicking the car out of the garage.

I've seen the saw stop jobsite saw in the flesh and was not put off by the "plastic"

IMO, in a hobbiest shop tenon jigs are more trouble than they are worth -- cutting 4 tenons by hand is as quick.

box joints are another matter, but these blades Freud Tools | 8" Box Joint Cutter Set and Saw Blades for Finger Joints, Square Cut Box Joints, Rabbets, Grooves, and Dovetails remove the need for a dado set.

I've had the Laguna fusion now for 18 months and are very happy with it. Its well aligned straight out of the box and very accurate. With a good blade (Freud fusion P410T) I get joint quality cuts all the time. I had a problem early on but that was sorted out by Gregories very smoothly. The fence is rock solid and dead on parallel to the blade and slots. The mitre gauge, however, is garbage and I ended up splurging on an Incra 1000SE and mitre express and the results are perfectly accurate crosscuts and mitre cuts. Highly recommended but I wouldn't rule out the Harvey. They are the same as the Grizzlys in USA and are rated highly. I'd be happy with either.

If I had my time over again I would have bought the Sawstop PCS but at twice the price its hard to justify other than the safety factor.

I've had my Fusion for about 3mths now and it has done a lot of work. I'm still using the original blade and it is doing a very reasonable job. I'll upgrade when it starts getting a bit dull.

The dust collection works OK - the cabinet has about 2" of sawdust in the base but this will build up until the angle of repose is met and then it will all get sucked out the bottom DC hole anyway )

It overheated a few times over the worst of our summer - tripped the 10A RCD. Cooled down and worked fine again.

It is very accurate and solid. The fence is fantastic. Quick to adjust accurately and solid.

    I'm happy with my purchase.

I'm about to get a trenching blade (Dado for our US friends) so it will be interesting to see how it copes with the wider cut. I'm sure it will cope just fine.

    Cheers, JK

Because of size, portability and safety i opted for a sawstop jobsite as my first table saw. Just picked it up late yesterday.

I havent really had to do anything that requires dead on accuracy just yet. I happy so far and bought a dado blade etc but haven't had time even to do a test cut with that.

    Hi
Had my Fusion for about six months and could not be happier. Everything was straight and square straight out of the box. Dust extraction is satisfactory but I will be making another port in the base. Has done everything I have asked of it so far including full thickness ripping of pretty hard eucalypt. Pretty easy to move with built in wheels.

    Cheers

Mike good to hear your comment. I am interested in the Fusion (and maybe the TS-1040E from Baileigh even though I would need to get it shipped) but price and safety of Sawstop is an important swinger to it. Wish there were more brands with this type of safety feature!

I take it from your comment on the dust extraction that it could be better. I did feel from the video's I saw that the dust line inside did not look like 4 inch even thought the port on the outside of the machine is 4 inch?

Do the sawstops every go on sale anywhere? I think I'd get a fusion if I decided against a sawstop in the future, that said, I like my fingers so I'll probably get a sawstop.

The sawstop is a great safety feature, but your fingers shouldn't be there to start with.

True enough, but even the most experienced make mistakes. I'm a carpenter so I'm used to spinning blades and fingers being in close proximity, but I've had little experience with table saws. I'd like that safety net. I don't see it as something that would make you blasé either, even with a safety feature there the thought of putting your hand into the blade makes me cringe!

We have a Sawstop at our Men's Shed. Had it about a year. Beautiful machine, very well built, splendid fence and best of all it recently saved a finger for one of our members who was reaching in to remove an offcut. Sensible chap, probably one of the least likely in our Shed to make this mistake, but it happens.

If I had room in my own shed for a SawStop I'd sell whatever I needed to to buy it.

The 4 inch external port splits just inside the cabinet - half goes to the blade and half goes to the cabinet. As I say not bad but as with all machines could be better.

    Cheers
