    Default Laguna platinum dovetail

    Hi All

    I have just bought a LAGUNA PLATINUM DOVETAIL 10" 3HP 15 amp plug 1PH 220VOLTS C/W 30" RAILS With the 5/8 arbour

My intention was to buy a Harvey HW110LGE-30 Table saw 3 HP 15 amp plug arbour 30mm / Optional 5/8''
But as things turned out at this point in time they are now a special order for the 5/8 arbour and there would be no delivery until the middle of next year.
Thus I have bought the above Laguna unit!! The question I would like some help with please, what is the difference between the Harvey and the Laguna.
What is the Platinum Dovetail or is it just sales talk.

    Regards colbra

I read everything even if I can't contribute to the topic...
I wouldn't interpret anything about the reputation from a lack of response - potentially more that nobody has any information you won't already, based on the actual conversations you had.

    I agree with Poundy.
Also, I would have thought those questions would have been researched and answers found the before committing to a purchase?

I'm afraid I don't have any advice on the difference either but would love to here your thoughts on the laguna.

Without having both TS side by side its very hard to see the differences between the two but they do look near identical. As to your question regarding the dovetail ways being marketing talk....here is my 2 cents. Once you set the blade to the desired angle/height you pretty much lock it to that point.....the 'smoothness' counts for zero then. If it were a milling machine where the bed moves then the dovetail feature would be key to the smoothness and accuracy.

Well that struck a cord of interest.... all remarks on how good the LAGUNA PLATINUM DOVETAIL 10" 3HP were made by the distributors and by Allan Gregory and he stated that the machine would be perfect straight out of the box, Well after Monday/22nd I will know all about it first hand. I have never had a machine that did not require some alignment.
I can do the basic adjustments with an adjustable set square by measuring off the mitre slots to the saw blade and if necessary correct with the cross fence. The table I would use a straight edge I am planning to have a wood machinist with his equipment check it as well.
Now last but not least is my working relationship with Gregory's I have dealt with them over the years and found them to be an honest company that has been in business for many years.
If there is any interest in what I find about the LAGUNA PLATINUM DOVETAIL 10" 3HP please reply, thank you all for your reply's

I must admit to being somewhat confused. First you imply that Gregory’s has a bad reputation and complain because no-one commented. Then after a few guys mentioned that they didn’t know the saw well enough to comment, you’re now happy, and telling us Gregory’s is great.

Makes no sense to me at all.

    Hi cobra,

Whilst I have no experience with either machine it would be beneficial if you could post a few pictures for future reference.

I have been considering a new table saw and one of these two would be my choice.

I think I heard somewhere that the harvey comes out of the same factory as the laguna? Maybe someone else could chime in here.

The dovetail thing does strike me as a bit of a gimmick. The thing I don't like about the saw is that it has a splitter and anti-kickback pawls in lieu of a riving knife. In my experience splitters are so inconvenient that most users consign them to a bottom shelf of long lost/useless/annoying items. Apart from that it would seem to me to be a very nice saw.

Gregorys is fantastic. Their service is amazing. They follow up on everything I need immediately and have taken quite a bit of money off me over several orders.....

edit: Aldav, it seems to have a riving knife dude: https://www.gregmach.com/product/lag...inum-dovetail/

My understanding is that the Harvey Factory produces the Laguna. The Laguna is a Harvey saw rebranded not the other way around to my knowledge. When I was shopping for a saw my research led me to believe the two saws are identical except for that the Harvey had a 30mm arbor vs a 5/8" one, an aluminium extrusion on the fence vs a nylon one, and different colors/branding.

When I was looking the standard Laguna Platinum was more expensive than the Harvey, but the Laguna Platinum Dovetail version was cheaper than the equivalent Harvey dovetail version... go figure.

I never was sure how much difference, functionally, the dovetail trunnions would make - presumably stiffer, more precise in movement, and more mass overall - but I really have no idea.

    Cheers, Dom

Hi Colin make what you will about my comments !.... I have always had a good relationship with the company, what I did do is create a story line to my ends, I did achieve this.
if you read it, a few time and see if it helps. if not well..... I am very sorry
    regards colbra

Just a little add on...... I will try to put pictures and a comments of the machine about Wed next week
