I thought about this too Derek however I too rarely work with sheet timber and when I do I'm usually using it on boxes so I rip it up with the circular saw and do the final cuts on the table so I have no need for extended rails on the TS

My Men’s Shed have the contractor version of the Saw Stop Saw, essentially this unit as you see it. But with cast iron wings (we paid extra for those) and wheels. The wheel system is brilliant.

We have had it for two or three years, whenever they came out, whenever that was.

It is, quite simply, a very accurate saw once set-up, which wasn’t hard nor onerous. For doing 90º cuts, it is on the money each and every time. As for 45º cuts. Our combined experience is, it delivers. By combined, I mean all of the various people with all of their various levels of competence using this machine, week in, week out.
I myself, made a number of French Cleats for hanging cabinets, about 9 metres worth of cuts. Once properly set to 45º, any deviations were not measurable. Each and every cut was on the money.

We have a couple of box makers in my Men’s Shed, both never seem to have any issues. They do though, need to correct the angle setting to 45º actual. Once set, and, as long as nothing is changed, bumped (heavily), or fiddled with, cuts are on the money.

One thing that certainly made a difference, is having a magnetic feather board. To be honest, I have almost no idea how anyone can make consistent repeatable cuts, regardless of the angle, without something like this.

We have the base kit and one overhead accessory unit, brilliant bit of gear.

One small, but reasonably expensive bit of equipment that you need to hold if you have the Saw Stop Saw, is a spare brake cartridge and a spare blade. Once the Saw Stop brake cartridge does its stuff, the blade is stuffed, as well as the brake cartridge. The spare brake cartridge is around $100, and, if you wish to fit a Dado blade system, you will require the Dado Brake cartridge, about $140.

The Dado sets for the Saw Stop Saw, are, as far as I understand, a bit limited in the range available of ones that will work correctly. We have a dado set (200mm I think) plus the dado brake cartridge unit. The Dado set on the Saw Stop Saw delivers, trench after trench after………..

By the way, our Saw Stop Saw, safety system, works! For our application, a Men’s Shed with safety as a super priority, it was virtually the only saw we considered once we had personally seen a demonstration of a sausage induced saw stop happening. Really, really impressive. Everyone allowed to use our table saw, has done a safety induction course, but, things do happen.

    Some thoughts, Mick.

Well CRAP. I went to Carbatec today and had a good look at the SawStop and it is amazing, the fence glides like a hot knife through butter. The Laguna is going to be near on $2000 cheaper and the Harvey cheaper again but without looking at them in the flesh it's a big punt.

Well you missed your chance on the Harvey. BBTA just upped their price on the lge30 from 1999 to $2999. That kind of bargain can't last forever. At least now there is less doubt that the Harvey is the exact same saw as the Laguna.

Unfortunately not, funds were required elsewhere.
