Default Mitre gauge for a 1/2" slot

Hi, I have an old MTD brand combination machine, 10" saw, 6" planer and a boring spindle. It has a mitre slot that is smaller than the standard at 1/2" x 5/16". Is there a comercial mitre gauge that I can buy, or is it a case of make one up myself?

    Thanks, Ian

G'day Ian and welcome to the forum.

I doubt very much that you'll be able to buy a commercial mitre gauge with a 1/2" bar. The standard these days is 3/4".

My first table saw was an very old Aussie made MBT saw/planer combo machine. It had a mitre gauge with a 1/2" bar. There was quite a bit of slop between the bar and slot though.

I was going to make a new bar but when I thought about it I realised trying to restore/improve such an old, worn machine was just not worth the trouble. Yours may be in a lot better condition than mine but and it may be worth giving it a go.

    Regards, Kev

Thanks for the reply Kev. I am new to woodwork, and I thought this combo would be a good introduction into tablesaws. The machine itself is in reasonable condition, but the stand is a bit rusty. It seems to cut fairly well though, and the motor is smooth.
I am now weighing up whether to take the top into work and machine the slot out to a more conventional size, or just to make up a mitre gauge. I think it will be the latter as there isn't much meat in the cast iron table.

    Cheers, Ian
