    Default SCM Panel saw

    Hello

I’ve found an SCM SI16w panel saw for sale. About to go look at it this weekend. I’ve been doing a lot of research but keen to hear on experiences from anyone who has one or knows about them. Anything I should watch out for? The guy is selling it pretty cheap ($1500). I’ll be using it for hobby stuff, cabinet making mainly.

I’ve also noticed there are different versions of this saw. Some are SCM”i” SI 16w and some are just SCM SI 16w. Does anyone know the difference?

There seems to be quite a few of similar machines coming up for sale at quite cheap prices - due to the limited market for them S/H.

The main issue is the very large footprint as these saws occupy a lot of real estate, the other major blocker is they are generally 3ph power, both of which most hobbyists don't have. Most have come out of commercial shops so they will have had a lot of use and are probably being replaced due to wear, cost to overhaul, or simply because there are now numerous more efficient saws available.

I was offered one a while back for far less than your price whilst picking up a mill/drill for my BIL. It had seen an easy life making transport crates in an aluminium joinery shop, so low use. It would occupy my whole workspace. Thanks, but no thanks.

Fully agree with everything that Mobyturns has said.

SCM is a very good brand of slider, and well supported. If you have the space then go for it.

But it was an industrial machine - Minimax is their hobbyist brand - and was priced accordingly - so are spare parts, but they are available. You will almost certainly require three-phase power - which will give you the opportunity to buy more 3P stuff ....

If you have a panel saw you probably wont need a mitre saw.
I sold my mitre saw after I got my panel saw and regained some space back.
