Thread: Table saw research

I must admit that having coveted the idea of a table saw for some time I have yet to get around to aquiring one. For sometime I have read the various posts on just what is the best saw. Some seem to be in geater favour than others but to date nothing seems to have reached the consensus of best for the the hobbiest. I have yet to read anything that would do more than give opinions, so there is probably no best saw but a number that might suit the purpose. Reading the posts is fine but I can understand why someone new here would ask the question again as to date no post has really given a definitive answer. However the TSC210HB seems popular with its owners along with the Jet supersaw followers (or lovers in Wongo's case) not to mention most of the 3h.p. contenders.
Happy to add absolutely nothing to the quality of this discussion, John.

You will also need to know how to sharpen chisels.

Dazzler, why do you sharpen them, when mine go blunt I just use them as a tin opener/screwdriver/door wedge.
What's all this "sharpening" stuff about then

All the saws will have a cast iron top and a good sturdy fence. At that price range I would be researching the dealer, finding out who has the best customer service/after sales service - as you will need it sometimes.
Also, I would go for the best deal with freight and save the money for a bandsaw, general consensus is they are much more versatile than just a table saw.

I'm another who doesn't mind you asking your question.
My $0.02's worth ...
Have you looked at (or seen) the JessEm Mast-R-Slide? It looks as though it would substitute for a sliding table and an Incra mitre gauge.
My own view is that a table saw is a pretty limited piece of gear. sure it rips to width and can cut dados at an angle to the face of the stick (something that is very difficult to do with a router) and of course you can do a lot with one after you make a heap of jigs, but other tools (such as a SCMS) are often faster and more convient for tasks such as most cross cutting and mitre jobs.

Ian ,
I agree a table saw has limited cpabilities , I just did a Google search and checked out the Master slide ,It looks great and well engineered .
One of these fitted to a Leda 2325Cb (if its possible ) or SB10-H would make a nice conbination.I would really like a sliding table ,but don't particularly want an outrigger style , I have limited space right now until I get the extension to my workshop finished. This set up looks like the solution. Maybe even the 12" carbatech with this table would be the ducks guts.
Do you know of any distributors of the Mast-R Slide in Oz ?, all I got on Google was American sites .
Im getting pretty tried right now , ll look again tomorrow and see if they have international agents.
Thanks again.
Ok I sent them an e-mail through their website recieved a reply this morning the Australian distributor is Carbatec.Last edited by Woodlee; 3rd March 2007 at 11:28 AM. Reason: additional info

Thanks Cliff for contributing to the list , I'm near the point of suffering burnout .
I sent an e-mail to Felders this morning , lo and behold about 1/2 hr later I got a phone call from them ,they are sending me a couple of brochures and a dvd to look at.
I was just looking at the Hammer labeled machines with sliding tables .
They look expensive ,very expensive."Outside of a dog a book is man's best friend ,inside a dog it's too dark to read"

Recent purchase
Hi - I was in a similar situation to you - I was wanting to upgrade from a 18 year old Triton to a table saw. I had a little more limited budget - aiming for less than $1000. I ended up settling for a Ledacraft 2325G, and so far it seems to be performing pretty well - accurate, quiet and powerful. Suits my needs. I have been considering a sliding mitre table addition, but having read the forums, it seems that for the money, a good crosscut sled will do the job unless you are wanting an outboard sliding table to do really big board.
I paid about $770 including a 100 tooth blade plus the standard one, and it included freight. Good service and help from Frank at Northern Machinery in Melbourne.
Hope that is helpful to you - best of luck
Steve

How can you put a Felder in the same league as a Martin... I wouldn't even put an Altendorf in the same league as a Martin.
But your right...hang the expense go for gold!..lol
