Doug, I rang up a couple of their interstate branches and they told me the same thing ie the arbor won't take dadoes if I understood correctly.

Might pay for you and Doug to confirm that you're talking about the same saw.

The SB-12 that Doug mentions has the open stand and wings whilst the SB-10H has an enclosed stand and solid wings

Well I do not own a dado blade yet but I bought the saw with the future purchase of one in mind. since I dont own one and havent even seen one out of the box, I will post a photo and ask what the extra 20mm of thread hanging out past the nut is for if its not to fit a dado blade.

I bought mine in October last year, I wonder if the specs have changed?

Doug, the wider throat plate may be for when you tilt the blade to make 45 degree angle cuts.

The best way to check for dado blade capacity is to measure the remaining thread on the arbour with the nuts etc fitted but without a blade. This will show if there is room for a dado setup and the max width.

Mine is a TSC 10HB and I can fit a 20mm width dado blade on mine even though it was claimed it couldn't because dado blades normally go up to 30 mm.

That maybe the case with yours. Only once did I need it bigger then 20mm and all I did was move the fence and made a second pass.

Edit posted at the same time as your photo looks like yours is enough like mine.

One other aspect to consider is the arbour size suitable for a dado which is either a 5/8" or 30mm.

    Peter.

The saw will tilt through its full range of movement with the narrow-slotted throat plate fitted. there is no need for the wide slotted throat plate except for to accommodate a dado that I can see.

Before I bought the saw I was shown an unassembled one in its box that was about to be assembled for the showroom. they were waiting for new stock to arrive in time for their october sale. The sales rep, I think his name was Michael, told me it took a dado blade. I expressed surprise as this was not specified on the website. He showed me the length of thread on the arbor and showed me the dado throat plate, identifying it as such.

If Tiger is being told that this is not the case, then either the specs have been changed or he is asking about another saw than the SB-12

I was definitely asking about the SB-12, it's possible that the salesmen didn't know what they were talking about but I specifically said to 2 of them that I would not buy the machine if it couldn't take dadoes and they assured me it wouldn't.

All I can say, Tiger, is to have a look at the arbor and see how much thread is sticking out on a demo model or get them to open up a box and see, if there isnt one in the showroom.

If all it takes to make a saw dado blade capable is an extra inch of thread surely it would make sense to make it that way on any saw powerful enough to run a dado.

Might this have something to do with compliance with European standards which I believe discourage or prohibit the use of dados on table saws? One issue I’ve heard of is the risk of the extra momentum of the dado causing the nut to undo when used with a braked motor.

    Hey Tiger,

I was wondering if you made a decision yet?

G'day Doug, I'm now leaning toward Carbatec's 1.5 HP version, it only requires 10 amp and definitely takes dado blades, just got come up with the money now .

    Hi Tiger,

Do you mean the 10" contractors saw? Carba-Tec 10" Contractors Saw : CARBA-TEC

I looked at that one too and it will probably do all that you want it to for boxmaking. I opted for the SB12 for the greater depth of cut and more power for my bigger projects but it does come with the 15 amp plug which can be a problem for some people.

Probably the best of the 10 amp models for you would be the carbatec one. Come the revolution 15 amp power outlets will be compulsory in every garage.

I hope you are happy with your decision whichever way you go.

Thanks Doug and yes that is the machine, I would have liked to get the more powerful one but too many issues with it, would hope to be able to use this for more than just boxmaking.
