Default 6 inch woodman jointer guard.

I aquired a small used 6 inch woodman jointer. It doesn't have a guard. 3 blades.

    1. Can anyone post a picture of the guard? I'm going to have to make something and find a place to mount a spring for it. Might help to see an original first.

    2. I did a test on it on scrap hardwood. First time ever that I have used a jointer. The piece constantly wanted to drift away from the fence. Is this normal?
I didn't fight this tendency too much just in case too much pressure might risk a slip of the push block and hand into the blade.

Would the guard normally steer the piece into the fence a little like a feather board action? Should I be more aggressive with sideways pressure on the push block? Should I be unconcerned and let it wander?
Is this caused by lack of pressure over the infeed table? I tried to focus any downwards force over the outfeed. Was that wrong?

The piece constantly wanted to drift away from the fence. Is this normal? Doesn't sound normal to me
Would the guard normally steer the piece into the fence a little like a feather board action? It would definitely help
Should I be more aggressive with sideways pressure on the push block? No, you run the risk of slipping off
Should I be unconcerned and let it wander? If it still does that with the guard, you should get it checked out
Is this caused by lack of pressure over the infeed table? Nope
I tried to focus any downwards force over the outfeed. Was that wrong? That's the correct way to do it

I have never noticed any jointer to cause a workpiece to drift away from the fence, but perhaps I subconsciously overcome it without realising it. I would believe that it would happen with a helical head which has the cutters shearing away from the fence, but that would/should be a bit of a facepalm moment for the manufacturer

Have you put much time into the machine to check it out beforehand? Are the blades sharp enough or dull and rusty? tables pretty close to coplanar? blades appearing to be protruding from the cutterblock an even amount side to side? leading or trailing snipe (check on both sides of the cutterblock by jointing the edge of a 3/4" workpiece on the left side of the cutter then the right side).

I have a Woodman jointer, the guard was plastic. I ended up making one from 6 MM thick aluminium, will take a pic tomorrow of it for you. The guard actually pushes the timber into the fence.

No I haven't put much time into the machine. Just started with it. Of course part of the problem is that I wouldn't know what was normal and what isn't.

Sharp blades and a guard would be a place to start.

Where are you is Brisbane? I may be able to drop over for a look, or you could come to mine for a chat and a play.

    Cheers

    Hi Bevan
I'm about 2 suburbs north from you. If you can have a look sometime give me advice I'd be thrilled!

Weekends are often a hassle for me due to market commitments. However, I'm sure we can work something out soon. I'll send you a PM.

A special thanks to Bevan for giving up some of his work time to come and help out a novice. I have the blades sharpened and reset. I thanked Bevan and he said 'It's what you do.'
I have had the same attitude from several other forum members.

Now I just need to figure out some sort of guard so I can keep all my fingers.
