Advice wanted on used Carbatec thicknesser
Hello, a Carbatec 15 inch thicknesser is available locally asking 1000 aud. Seller says it is a year old and knives need “sharpening” but works well.
I have been considering buying a thicknesser such as the dewalt 735 for 1200 or the Carbatec $900 unit or actually leaning towards the Sherwood $1000 unit with tungsten blades and dust extractor.
Would this local second hand this be a good purchase? (I would buy new blades for it.
Any advice appreciated

Looks like a good buy. According to Carbatec there is a 2 year warranty so if you can get a receipt from the seller you still have 1 year left. The blades can be resharped easily by a saw doctor. I can't recall the exact price but I would expect around $30, which is better than the $100 for new blades or $120 for the tungsten. Not sure exactly which Sherwood unit you are looking at however in my opinion this is a good step up from the bench top lunchbox style units - the Sherwood would also incur delivery costs.
You really need to get a dust extractor for it, but you would need that for any thicknesser. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

Thankyou for the reply. I didn’t realise the blades could be sharpened, I’m sure I could find a saw doctor locally so that will help. It will also leave room in my budget for a dust collector which I need in my shop anyway.
Cheers!

I saw one of these on Instagram recently that was in an original colour of a dirty green. Still going strong, these are a good machine, jump at it or someone else will and they will not regret it.

Thats half the price if a new one. I would be getting round there for a look at least. From the photo the owner has not applied the TLC but a bit of a clean up should not be hard. Provided it runs with no nasty noise from bearings or motor.
Regards
