Default Delta 22-560 failure - Dewalt or Hafco spiral replacement

    Evening all,

Frustrating arvo in the garage. My well used Delta 22-560 maybe has ended it's life. The pulley key has gone (apparently it's a common problem on these in the USA), and I need a new belt, remove pulley, somehow work out to fix slackness in pulley and get it working. Only cost me $250 second hand quite a few years ago and I've sent quite a bit of aussie hardwoods through it.

I'm halfway through a dining table, so need to thickness my river filled camphor boards.

    Two options appear viable:

Hafco T13S with spiral insert - around $800 or so
    Dewalt from bunnings around $1050.

I know there's loads of threads. The price difference is not a deal breaker. People rave about the dewalt but the Hafco spiral also seems ok?

    Cheers,

    Tom

Actually - late last night when doing a search I came across the exact thread comparing the various models. Time to decide this morning!

I saw this deal popup. https://www.timbecon.com.au/sherwood...al-spiral-head

$999 with a helical spiral head. I'm not sure how it compares to the others but it looks good to me.

A few people on here have brought these including myself. It does have a true helical spiral head so the cutting edge hits the timber at an angle creating a shear cut and the inserts are carbide rather than HSS so theoretically should give you a longer life between rotations of the 4 edges. Just be aware that the inserts are not an of the shelf design as the cutting edge is a sharper angle at 37° and you can't put your standard 30° insert in to replace them. You can buy them from Timbecon or aftermarket inserts can be brought here.

A few years ago Australian Wood Review did a comparison of the DeWalt, the Hafco T13 and the Carbatec CT330X; the DeWalt gave the best finish overall.

About a year ago I fitted a helical cutter head to a friends Dewalt; he reckons it has improved it beyond recognition. The machine is much quieter, the finish is superb and the built in fan completely eliminates any need to connect to a dust extractor.

I own the CT, although I’m satisfied with it’s performance with the benefit of hindsight I would have gone for the DeWalt. Around $1000 plus ~$650 for the new head; his was supplied by Wood Craft Supplies in Howard QLD

Almost 2 years ago I fitted a helical head to my DW 735. Sherwood do a head to fit the DW.

Makes a very good machine even better. As you can see the head costs a fair chunk less then a genuine shilex. Not going to claim it's as good but its doing what I need it to do. Still on the first edge of the cutters too so they are not bad.

I haven't got a suggestion, but you beat me by miles. I bought the 22-580 when I first started woodworking in 2006. I hardly used it, probably 200 board feet of light work as a good friend has a delta DC580 with a spiral head and he offered it up for any use. both of those have 580 in them but the planers aren't remotely similar to say the least. the DC580 weighed twice as many pounds as the 22-580 cost in dollars.

But we have one thing in common - my planer was out of commission quickly due to inadequate parts supply. the back retaining bar on the 22-580 was mild steel and could be hit by something while planing (jammed shavings? I don't know what) lifted and destroyed. though I broke my planer almost right away, the parts were exhausted, and Delta continued selling the planer for several years longer, anyway. That's delta.

I never wanted a spiral head thickness planer - I rarely use a planer designed after 1860 and when I do, I abuse the planer. I bought dewalt's 734 and though I don't use it often, I abuse it hard. i've hard this model isn't marketed overseas - it's just a typical four post 12 1/2 or 13 inch planer and not the tugboat shaped 735. I babied the 22-580 and vowed I would never baby a tool again - that way at least if a tool broke, it would be due to getting a hot lunch, and I'd know which tools to end up with.

The 735 with spiral is ultra popular here. I've never heard anything bad about them, though the cost is moon cost. As in, travel to the moon and spend the same to get there as to buy the planer. It's been around for a very long time, though and dewalt's support is probably far better tan delta's.

I have a Delta TP400LS which is the same as your machine. I have the same problem and have once before replaced the pulley , belt and key. It recently broke down in the same way and I have ordered the parts from the US, arriving tomorrow according to tracking.
    Cost me $219 (shhhh!).
