I used to sharpen my own when it had the strait blades. Made a jig similar to these.

The blades can get about 2 or perhaps 3 sharpenings before they are too worn down.

thanks John
I'm not sure I trust myself doing the diy thing
I've just had a thought that Henry Bros may sharpen them,Ill give them a call
but today I found a good deal on a sherwood spiral cutter head so I'm thinking about that as well
anybody done the upgrade to this particular head, if so what did you think of it?
after looking today I've noted that there are a few different ones available with the sherwood being the cheapest, probably down to the amount of cutters
cheers

I fitted a helical head to a friend’s 735; providing your not a complete numpty it’s not difficult. Some heads require you to remove all the cutters first as the cutting diameter is slightly larger than the bearing housings but his didn’t need it; it could be carefully inserted fully assembled. I don’t recall the brand or who sold it; sorry. The performance has been amazing though, he doesn’t regret the outlay.
His cost approx $600 so the Sherwood version appears to be reasonable. I’d go for it.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

I put the sherwood head in mine almost 2 years ago. I watched a couple of how to videos first. I am reasonably pleased with it and have not even looked at a blade since I put it in. As it slips in through the bearing holes with the cutters already on its a smidgen smaller in diameter than the original head so you have to adjust the depth of cut scale after its in. The max cut is a bit less too but since I never took full depth cuts anyhow thats no big deal.

My DW735 is fitted with the undersize CTS cutter head. As orraloon has noted there is a reduced depth of cut, but like him I haven't found that much of a burden. I noticed that the Sherwood head is available on Amazon at the moment for $403.39 - Sherwood Spiral Cutter Head Upgrade Only Suits DeWalt DW735-XE : Amazon.com.au: Home Improvement. Go for it, you'll never regret it.

thanks you guys
I now know a lot more on this topic, interesting you tube video/s , on one of them it seems that the head has 4 rows of cutters compared to the
2 rows from sherwood, I think I've seen one with three rows as well, most are a lot dearer
I thought the amperage would be lower with the spiral cutter but its higher and seems capable of handling harder timbers
Aldav, lucky I didnt buy one last nite they were $429, even more tempting at $403, thanks for the heads up
I get the feeling that the standard blades dont last too long before they lose their edge, I will probably go ahead with the upgrade
cheers
