    Default My first Felder

After a lot of contemplating. Made the decision to go with Felder.

The beast/mother of all JP combo finally arrived today.

More photos will come as I unpack/unload.

    Yes spiral head 120 diameter.

I didnt quite need the 510mm capacity but Felder NZ only has this size available otherwise its a 6 months wait - The timing is quite good as the Robland was sold just yesterday.

So far I am quite impressed with Felder's care into machine's packing and preparation for sea freight. there are screws everywhere and lock down bits and pieces - Quite different to SCM's way of packing. Perhaps packing a bandsaw is quite different to packing of a JP combo. These detail shows a lot about the care they have put into the machine.

The instruction to remove the pallet under the machine was useless and didnt work, however my pallet mover can fit into the gap underneath the machine quite nicely, I quickly put together a small ramp and shifted the machine off the pallet.

although the machine's capacity is 510mm, you need at least 1300mm from the back wall to the front of the machine, this is to allow the fence and a few bits and pieces that stick up/out.

Finding a home for the AD951 was not easy in my relatively small workshop. AD951 measures almost 2.4m long by 1m wide. you need another 300mm behind the machine for the bits and pieces that stickup/out when you are in planer mode.

The dust extraction was a major task, I had a combination previously, the dust extraction was easy for the combo, I now have 3 machines (Griggio/Felder/Casadei), each machine requires its own extraction.

Yes, there are two blast gates, I originally was going to use just 1 flex to service the JP combo when its in either buzzer or planer mode, thought I can reach a compromise, but no, there is no compromise. hence you see almost two different lines servicing the Felder.

I have used the Felder to thickness a few 400mm wide board over the weekend. it was super quiet - almost the same as my $199 Ryobi pedestal drill press - and I was planing 400mm wide board. The chips are smaller. each chip is about the size of M&M chocolate but a lot thinner very easy for the dusty to suck them away. the hood is 140mm. standard 150mm Danish ducting just slide on. I put a layer of sponge around the hood and it sealed up very nicely. The hood can be taken off and replaced with a larger one. I will be doing this when I have time.

The variable infeed speed is pretty cool. I havnt tried all of them, only one setting, the slowest.
Power rise/fall is great, I dont mind the hand cranking but I think comes standard?

    So far so good.

only regret - should have bought it earlier.

also if I bought it 2 years ago I would have saved $1000 NZD due to currently weaker currency.

Felder must have spent sometime observing the workflow of a woodworking shop and made little tweak to their machine that made their feature stand out from the crowd. I absolutely loved the prism guidance system. one push you are up to 8mm of material removal, if this is too much then move down to 0.5mm if you want to, there is no need to unlock and then lock any knobs/handle, just push or pull. SCM has this as well but you have to unlock/lock everytime you want to make finite change to the amount of material removed when in buzzer mode. I thought 8mm removal was going to be an effort, but no, its about the same as removing 2mm. perhaps the spiral head helped.

There is a function to change the concaveness of the outfeed table, handy when you want to glue boards, I think SCM has this on their Class machine as well.
