Helical head for carbatec TH-BX330P
Hi folks.
Has anyone got any experience with a replacement cutter head for this machine?
Woodcraft Supplies have one for the Hafco TT330 which they say should work, but I'm not certain. At $625 is only twice the price of a full set of replacement TC cutter inserts for the spiral, head in my machine.
This is my thicknesser

But I can't find and info on the Hafco one to compare it to.
Can anyone help me out with this one?

I have the same machine. A small machine is a big investment to put a true helical into.
(IMO) You'd be much better off getting a big machine and upgrade it - it would cost the same and the result would be outstanding.
If you are seeking on improving its performance, consider these: https://sje-tools.com/carbide-insert...814586777.html
$100 for a full set and they are carbide. I bought mine 2 years ago, use it almost daily and still haven't swapped sides.
I fully intend sharpening them on the diamond plate when it comes to the third rotation.
There are many reviews on the site for them.

Thanks Evan. Have you been running mostly hardwood through on the carbide cutters? I do a lot of ash, redgum and spotted gum... which is why the HSS ones aren't holding up.
That site shows the, as no longer available... I'll have a hunt for them elsewhere because the carbide ones from carbatec are $100 for 10 cutters.

Ha! They were yesterday. Just drop him a note, for he's a forum member!
I run everything through it. It's done a million miles of gum as I was making hundreds of breadboards for a client once.
The HSS cutters are easy to sharpen. Just do them by hand on 800 wet and dry then onto 4000 stone. Just hold them face down with your finger.

+1 for the sje inserts, we have gone Shelix at work but use his inserts because they're significantly cheaper than Byrd for at least equal performance (I reckon they might even be better); we use a lot of American Oak and Blackbutt at the moment and they just keep going. Even the occasional bit of MDF or plywood is no issue.
If they're out of stock just send him a message, he might be able to do another run.

Awesome, I'll grab a set and sharpen the old HSS ones to keep as backups in case I knick one of the TC ones.
Thanks guys.

I put one of their spiral cutter heads in my Sherwood 10 inch comb planar 12 months ago an couldn't be more happy with it. The finish straight off the machine is almost as good as a hand plane.
