Default New Jet 6 inch Jointer and fence tolerances

    Hi All,

I just purchased a brand new Jet 6 inch jointer as I don't have space for an 8 inch. Machine is well built and will hopefully serve me well for quite sometime. I have never owned a jointer before and I am in the process of setting it up. Using my straight edge I checked the tables for flatness as well as the fence. The fence along it's entire length looks fairly square to the beds but I have noticed that I have about .008" deflection in the fence around the centre. I have attached some photos. My train of thought is that that as long as the fence is square to the tables (which it appears to be) that it should still produce a decent, square reference edge but as I have never used a jointer before I am not sure if I am being a bit pedantic and whether this is within acceptable tolerances. I get that wood moves but also understand that a lot of projects start at the jointer.

I was told that Jet's tolerances are up to .010" but not sure if that is correct.

Any advice/feedback would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Trav.

Nothing to fret about, with the type of accuracy you're talking about I'd consider buying a second straight edge to verify that your straight edge is a straight edge.

Seriously run some timber through it and enjoy your new jointer.

Nothing to worry about, the buzzer fence at work has at least 1mm of bow in it and it works just fine

Thanks for taking the time to reply gents. I know there has always been a strong emphasis on accuracy when working with the table saw and wasn't sure if it had to apply to the jointer as well (other than knife settings).

I would think the squareness of the fence to the cutterhead would be the only really critical part of a jointer?

    There are 3 critical things:
Knives set to the outfeed table
    Tables are parallel
    Fence is square

The OP is showing that the fence is slightly bowed over the length which is not an issue.
