    Default Jointer recomendations

I'm in the market for a jointer. I don't have a huge budget, probably $1000 to $1500 and space is at a premium so probably an 8" long bed is out of the question.

I'm not jointing a lot of timber, nor is it very big so a 6" will probably be fine, possibly don't even need a long bed.

Anyway I'm looking for some recommendations on what to get, I'm thinking something from Carbatec or Hare & Forbes as I'm guessing anything else will be out of my price range.

Just trying to find the best quality for the budget that I have.

    Cheers.

See what you can get new or, more likely, second hand for your budget in a combo machine. The advantage is a much wider jointer - 10" or 12". The extra width is far more important than the length of the bed. Plus you get a thicknesser.

You can't reply Derek, you already own my dream machine with that Hammer )

Thanks, yeah searching for secondhand but always weary about second hand, especially when I don;t know what I'm looking at. I do have a 12" thicknesser so I can live with just a jointer. The majority of what I want to do is boxes so I won't be running huge pieces through. I would like a Hammer down the track a bit so this is just to get me through for a couple of years.

Actually this may be worth looking at as well.

I've been making similar considerations lately and I feel like the 8" is always a better buy if the budget allows. They don't take up that much more space and it's better to have and not need than need and not have. Hare and Forbes actually do sales somewhat regularly too, if you keep an eye out you could probably get their 8" for a little over a grand on sale.

    Hey Derek,

Do you know much about the Leda? This seems stupidly cheap but it's a 10" combo.

    Combinations : LEDACRAFT PT-107 PLANER/THICKNESSER 10 inch

The 8" Ledacraft planer is about the same price as the 10" ledacraft combination, this doesn't seem right to me. Am I missing something?

I don't know the machine, but the specs look good. Ledacraft are no doubt from the same factory as all the others. The price is certainly tempting. If others can offer positive reviews, and you can increase your budget, in my opinion it represents a better machine than your 12" thickie plus a new 8" jointer.

Does anyone know if the Laguna is a better brand than the Ledacraft?

A combo would be great but at the end of the day I'd rather a very good stand alone jointer than an average combination. Even thought the Laguna is only a 6"

I've had no problems with Leda's in the past, they're typically soundly built where it counts; although they make some of their savings on cheaper quality trim. (Plastic handles, etc. All easily replaced with better quality as/when needed, as most cast in China stuff does tend to 'all come from the same factory.' )

However, one spec I'd be wary of is "single phase motor - 3HP." I'd look into that... can't see it being 240VAC without bending the truth like a banana.

Given what you've already said, I think you'd be happier with a Laguna.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Yeah on paper the Leda Combo looks awesome, for the same $$$ I'd only be able to afford the 6" Laguna although I can probably stretch my budget up to close to $2k which would enable me to get the helical head 6"

    Hi Daz,
an important consideration is what timber you will be predominantly using,I also live in perth and machine a fair bit of Marri/Jarrah etc and would worry how long straight HSS cutters would last on these tough timbers.

I bought the Carba-Tec 10x8 combination machine about 3 years ago, this machine has a true helical head with carbide inserts and just recently replaced all the inserts.
While it would be nice to have a stand-alone long bed jointer for longer work I manage fine on this machine and don't have a lot of space for extra machinery.

I can't really fault the machine personally, even though it is Taiwanese.I paid $1700 when I bought it although significantly more expensive now.

Yes I will work a lot with Jarrah. Maybe the Laguna will be the better option.

Beyond Tools has this one on special which looks to be the same as the Carbatec unit with a different name
