Another +1 for Robert at Woodcraft/Wizard. I ordered a CTS helical off him a while back and the service was nothing short of excellent.

Woodcraft/Wizard are the company I got the Dewalt quotes from so it's good to know they get the nod.
Thanks guys.
Decisions, decisions probably should get a jointer first which is where I startedLast edited by Lappa; 12th June 2017 at 10:18 PM. Reason: More info

in terms of effort and potential time saving ...
a thicky is probably where you should start.
It doesn't take too much work to get a board flat enough with hand planes to then pass through the thicky to plane the opposite face.
The process is
hand plane one face so that enough of it is in a single plane that the board doesn't rock.
place the planed face down on the thicky table and pass through till the top face is completely flat.
turn the board over and pass the partly planed face through the thicky till it is completely flat and parallel.regards from Alberta, Canada

Whether or not you need a jointer will be up to how much you plan on using it, as there are ways around it eg sled on the thicknesser, jointing with a router, hand plane, width of stock etc. As there will be times when even with a jointer you'll be resorting to other methods to joint your work.
On the other hand having a jointer is a massive time saver.
In regards to spiral heads, maybe an unpopular opinion but i honestly love my straight knife thicky. I have a spiral head jointer and a straight knife thicky, and the finish on both is comparable. So if getting a spiral head means not getting a jointer I'd opt to put the money towards a jointer over getting the spiral head.

I just bought a CTS cutter head from Rob for my new Jet 6 inch jointer which is was more than happy to endorse over the more expensive Bryd and he made me feel at ease with my decision. So far very happy with the investment and Rob was fantastic to deal with and was happy to answer all my amateur questions. I rang him yesterday regarding a price for the same brand for a Dewalt 735 so I could consider whether to upgrade my current thicknesser.
BTW he will be down in Melbourne for the WW show in September.
Cheers,
Trav
