Laguna 12″ Parallelogram sniping

Hi,

Seeking some help or possible causes to start investigating.

We installed the above jointer about 8 mths ago and has only recently became operational say (3 mths) as we waited till our dust extraction system was up and running.

To date we have only put through a small amount of timber (maybe 30 / 50 LM) both hard and soft woods. From the get go it did a fantastic job no issues and everyone is very pleased, and all timber put through came out, exceptional.

last Thursday a board about a meter long was being put through 200 mm side down and it sniped at the end by about 30 mm, it was put through again and this time it tore a piece 150 long x 4- 6mm deep out the board. Suffice to say it scared the operator.

The board was 40 mm x 200 mm and the jointer was set to mill 2mm at a run. How the hell it took out 4-6 mm I have no idea. The jointer was turned off.

When I arrived I was advised what happened, I checked the machine and all seemed fine. So I grabbed a pine stud 70 x 35 and put it through and sure enough it snipped the last 30 mm I did this three times and each time it sniped 30 mm so I ended up with 90 mm snip at the end of the board.

I checked the cutting knives and they looked all fine, not blunt or damaged, I tried moving the guide in so I could run the board on different knives and it did the same thing. I moved the infeed table up to bare minimum and tried this and yes it worked for about 7 passes then sniped the middle of the board and a very small amount the end.

Sniping the middle of the board concerned me.

At this point I figured I'd stop and call the supplier for some help, which will be forthcoming early next week. This is a great machine and I feel it maybe something we are doing ----- not that I know what that is

Tomorrow I'm going to recheck everything especially that the knives and outfeed table to ensure they are correctly aligned and everything is parallel.

Is there anything else I can check or any opinion to why the jointer is now sniping.

Is the infeed or outfeed table dropping during use? I encountered a brand new very expensive machine doing this recently and it went back to the supplier never to return as they could not fix it. Note it was not a Laguna.

As said above sounds like something is moving during use

Thanks for the advise. As it turns it was an annoying simple fix. One of the other supervisors was on the same page as me to what we believed the cause, and fixed it before I had arrived

. I ran a number of pieces of timber through once all reset, the jointer is back to producing a fantastic result and NO sniping. This is one bloody nice jointer, just need to keep inquisitive fingers away.

So what was the issue ------- Someone altered the outfeed table and it was way off where it should have been

In the future to stop the situation from happening we are considering one of a few fixes.

1. Put a sign over the out feed table controls "DO NOT TOUCH".
2. Bend a bit of sheet metal that covers the controls and fix in place.
3. More education -- even though we have told everyone, ask if your not sure how to operate the gear.
3. Lock the tools out and put a sign up SUPERVISOR required before operating.

Humans love to find out why someone puts a "do not do this" sign on anything so that may not work.

Having been in factories and run my own business's I can tell you the only sure way to stop people plying with it will be, weld it place or cut off all your employee's hands

Bit dramatic China

might have a dramatic decrease in productivity though.

A slightly less dramatic approach is to remove the locking knobs and adjustment handle on the outfeed side. Obviously keep in a safe spot, having said that over the past 3 years I've had my jointer I've never touched the outfeed table.

LOL China, I guess that would solve the problem. Not sure I would get a show of hands from the committee of the Men Shed lol. I have considered taking the outfeed table knobs off, although I feel its a recipe for the parts to be lost.

I dare say I will scale back amputation and look at other more palatable methods
