Default Looking for someone with drum sander, northwest Sydney

    Happy New Year to all!

I am in the process of making my second hollow wooden surfboard and am looking for somebody who may sand the top and bottom decks for me.

The decks are yet to be attached to the frame and will be around 5.5mm with the underneath fibreglassed with epoxy. The top will be natural timber; strips of western red cedar and paulownia. To make the process easier and more accurate I am looking for the use of a drum sander. The decks are about 540mm wide by 1700 long and will need to be sanded down to a little under 5mm or so. So long as it is the same thickness across the board and down the lenght the exact thickness is not so cirtical.

I imagine this is a pretty simple operation for a drum sander, but unfortunately I do not know anybody who has one. Ay assistance will be gratefully accepted, and if necessary I am willing to contribute for your time and machine.

I live at Castle Hill but can travel to get this sorted. I will probably be right to go in the next couple of weeks.

    Hey mate,
I don't have a drum sander, but I got one of those attachments for a drill press that acts like a drum sander. I have to play around with my drill press to get the speed up (old drill press) but if you have a drill press I can drop it off to you. I'm down the road in baulkham hills.
Im not sure if this will do the job or not, but if your stuck it might be worth a shot?

    Default Thanks for the offer

    Andy,

Thanks mate for the offer. I have a similar item and did toy with that idea, but it is really important that the skins are uniform in thickness both along and across the length of the timber. If I can't find somebody on here with a drum sander (which are usually very accurate) I will contact one of the local joinery places and try my luck there.

    Thanks again Andy,

    Anthony

No problem mate. I thought about buying one of the carbatec drum sanders, which would come in handy when doing templates etc. Maybe in the near future.

The drill press and drum sander idea will work. Have done it myself. Make a fence which is clamped down to the table. Ensure that the table is square to the quill. Set the fence for a light cut and feed the material in against the rotation. Takes a little longer than a dedicated drum sander but it works and it doesn't cost a couple of grand or so.

I'd give it ago if I were you. I used to do my laminations this way.

    Cheers
