minimax fs 41es - whats it worth?
Hi All. My cabinet maker neighbour is moving town and needs to sell his well used thicknesser/jointer
Professional Combined Planer-thicknesser Minimax FS 41ES - SCM Group
I saw the machine a few weeks ago when picking up a slab but told him I didnt have a use for a thicknesser.
He has since gotten back to me to see if I can take it. I know nothing about machines of this calibre
I dont really need this machine as I am in the process of purchasing a large lathe.
That said, I do have some slabs that could be jointed up to make tables + my partner and friends would love endgrain chopping boards. No one in town sell these and I think I could create a small local market + tourists would love some local hardwood products.
While I do have 3 phase power I dont have a powerful enough DE or have the workshop set up to accommodate this machine - plenty of space however there would be some further investment to get this to pay for itself.
I am told the machine works well, has a spare set of cutters and he will throw in some mahogany slabs... I know this machine only has 410mm cutting width
I have done a search but cant see any Australian suppliers. US and Euro sites indicate its over 15K new.
I'd like to help my neighbour out but it has to pay itself off.
I guess I could always find another buyer if I dont use it enough.
I think its less than 10 years old but not sure. I havnt asked any specific questions yet.
What is the ballpark figure of this machine's worth?

Depends on options. Does it have electric rise/fall? Sounds like it has a Tersa cutter head maybe?
Last price i got about 5 months ago with the 'xylent' spiral cutter head was about $12k plus GST plus install for the FS41e so the FS41es is probably up around the 15-18k mark but prices have probably gone up since as transport + manufacturing costs are increasing rapidly.

A current model of that machine is about $18660.00 +gst. SCM have local representation again so parts shouldn’t be an issue.
Well used you say. About 10years old, if it has been cared for and maintained it might be worth 2/3 of a new price. Machines have long lead times at the moment in some cases.
$10k would be a very good deal I would think. .
I hope this helps..
it’s a good bit of kit. Way, way above anything you will buy from the likes of the timbercon and carbatech. a whole other level of machine. There ain't no devil, it's just god when he's drunk!!

If it was in good condition and in NSW I would go to about $7000 on something like it. They are a good, well built machine.

Offer him 5 big ones cash.
He’s got back to you so who else is going to buy it?
Its not like you guys are down here as your finding out chasing a lathe.
(if you don’t think it’ll upset him)

Thanks for the advice and pointers all. Much appreciated
I will go have a close look today. I think these are straight 4 blade knives rather than helicals / xylent cutters
Good points about transport and recent manufacturing / cost issues.
I turned down the offer to take it with a wry smile weeks ago because in addition to not envisaging any use for it, I could tell this was a whole different level of quality - I thought it would be worth as much as the upper suggestions.
Tom - who are the local reps for SCM?
I'll update how this progresses

Okay - so the link he sent wasnt quite correct
Its a CSM technomax FS41 elite - Neighbour says its a 9 year old
Manual hand crank height adjustment.
The blades on it are shot but comes with 4 sets of new straight blade knives
Needs a little cleaning up, a bit of light surface rust on the bed, etc and needs some minor reassembly
Everything is there, just not presently attached nor in the best presentation

He has offered it for 4K. I am hesitant to pay that but also hesitant at the risk offending by asking for any less
A good machine for the $?

That’s an entirely different machine to the one you showed before. Different pedigree and build quality.
quite frankly, $4k is too much. More like 1800. Good luck.

Thanks RB.
I am annoyed that the original link I posted was the one he sent me after I asked him what model it was.
I do feel sorry for him - hes been flat out in a 40 degree heat clearing out a massive shed full of 10 years worth of supplies, equipment and other crap for the past few weeks. I just dont feel 4K sorry for him
Thank you for your estimation - I'm glad I asked

SCM now have direct representation in Australia rather than an agent / dealer arrangement.
cheers
