My planer / thicknesser ate the dust shroud!
Well it took a few bites out of it anyway. So what I think happened was a small piece of wood came off a board and either got itself caught in the feed roller or hit the cutter head. Which somehow has caused the shroud to flex and make contact with the cutter head. I don’t think it needed to flex much to grab that flimsy dust shroud. That’s my theory , not sure how else it could have happened. Anyone seen something like this? It’s a woodman combo 310 and operating in thicknessing mode.

Just cut away the scraggly bits and move on - it will breathe easier with that bit removed, maybe it was trying to tell you this?

Hi Bob that bits gone and I don’t miss it. The parts that I do miss are the 8 totally destroyed cutter inserts and the chips from many of the others (at least 15). It could have told me in less expensive and less dramatic way. I have changed out what I could (only 5 spare cutter inserts on hand) and rotated the others. The shroud needs a little panel beating too so I will do that later this morning and give it a run it was getting a bit late for noisy shed work last night (gotta keep the neighbours onside). Well no one was hurt and I think the damage is easily fixable (well I hope there is no damage to shafts, bearings, alignments etc)
Cheers Baz

Lucky no one was hurt!
Snipe on its way...
You might have to adjust the infeed/outfeed after the accident... if you can adjust them at all? not sure about your machine.SCM L'Invincibile si X, SCM L'Invincibile S7, SCM TI 145EP, SCM Sandya Win 630, Masterwood OMB1V, Meber 600, Delta RJ42, Nederman S750, Chicago Pneumatics CPRS10500, Ceccato CDX12

On the off chance you don't know about this, it might ease the financial pain of replacement cutter inserts: https://sje-tools.com/
I have found them very much cheaper than other places, including buying from USA direct. Steve will assist you in picking out the right cutter if you're not sure, just drop him a line with your make and model in it.

So after a little panel beating and checking all inserts were secure I gave it a run. Annnd it’s working fine no vibrations, noises etc. Only thing there was one cutter that wasn’t seated down properly and caused an ever so shallow cutter width groove. I just narrowed it down to one of two cutters and took them out clean them up reinstalled and that took care of that. I will get onto sje tools very soon and get some replacements and spares. It really is a shame this happened other than this incident I just couldn’t fault the machine. Oh and the dust extraction shroud still works great maybe better
Cheers

I'm curious, which machine is it? The green is familiar, but I didn't think Festool made thicknessers... <grin>
