    Default Replacing cutter head

A shelix spiral cutterhead for my Carbatec CTJ-350 8 inch long bed jointer was delivered today. Looking for advice from anybody who has done this replacement job. Any tricks or traps?

    cheers,

Will follow along on this, I'm ordering a Shelix head for my Woodfast 10" jointer in the next couple of weeks but I'm on the fence about installing it myself. Got a local machinery place that does work at decent rates but moving the machine is such a hassle.

I've done both my jointer and thicknesser and to be honest it really isn't as daunting as it would seem, once you get started it will all make sense to you.

Watched the Grizzly video, where they said it would take about an hour. Took me over 3 hours, but it's done now.

My biggest issue was getting the pulley off, then getting the bearing out of the rear mounting block. I ended up taking the cutterhead assembly to my local mechanic. He used a pneumatic press to push it out. I couldn't get it to budge at all.

Installing the new shelix head was quite straightforward. Having new bearings is really the best way to go. Makes it much easier.

It cuts beautifully, but I don't think it's really any quieter than before. I think most of the noise is coming from the motor, not the rotating cutterhead. Not sure why though.

I'm glad I won't have to spend time setting the knife heights any longer. That was a very tedious job.

    cheers,

    ajw

I'm surprised that it isn't quieter, do you find it quieter when putting stock through it??

Yeah the bearings are the part that always get me. I've got the gear to get them off but putting new ones on is hard without buying more tools. Fiora Machinery have been more than happy to do it for me in the past and their rates were fair.

I've got a Jet JPT-260 combination machine that I've just ruined the blades on while thicknessing hoop pine glued together with epoxy for a boat I'm building. Two confined areas of reasonable chipping across all blades where epoxy lamination was. I am thinking a shelix spiral cutter might be a good replacement. Where can I get quotes from please?

That's Wizard right? That's where I was intending to purchase mine from, very good to deal with from past enquiries.

Thats because it is an American video, and daylight saving. Right now we are an hour in front, they are an hour behind plus an hours work time = 3 hours.

Have just replaced the cutter head on a Geetech 8". Replaced bearings as well and used a press to ensure no damage to bearings or housing. The machine runs much quieter and leaves a terrific finish. Prior to changing the head the machine was quite noisy and we found that the top pulley was slogged out enough to cause the problem. New pulley and realignment and noise level dropped significantly.

I think you're right. The noise is probably from a misaligned pulley. I didn't check that when I put it back together. Will have a look when time permits.
