The aim of a jointer is to just remove the stock that is too high (or low, depending on how you look at it) over a number of passes in order to eventually achieve a flat surface. You need very little downward pressure to achieve this.

I live close by in Hoppers Crossing if you need a hand.

The way I determine a board is finished is by drawing lines on the face being jointed and when they're all gone, I consider it done. I'm putting some pressure on the outfeed table, but I can't say if it's too much.

I definitely need to learn first-hand, youtube is great but can't relay the feel you must have with some things. Appreciate your offer Doug, I don't want to inconvenience you but if I could stand in a corner and watch some time when you're working on something that would be great. I'll send you a PM. I wanted to join a shed, but the one in Wyndham Vale is not open on weekends or evenings so I couldn't go because of work. I'll be starting working 4 days a week soon so hopefully I can visit there regularly too.

    Cheers

Ugh, ok. Now I'm not sure my new setup is accurate enough either because I don't think the jig supplied with the machine is that precise.

Those jigs allow you to quickly set up the knife to a "workable" solution. The only way to get it spot on is some kind of dial indicator. Companies are not going to fine tune those jigs to a level of accuracy that a dial indicator will give you. Having said that its probably not super important as it'll go through the thicknesser next. Having your thicknesser blades dead on is more important IMO.

Also bear in mind that wood constantly moves so don't be surprised if you joint a board leave it overnight and come back and realised its bowed again the next day. Minimising this is the choice of board to begin with not the process to straighten it.

Also given that you're new I'd highly advise looking at a few youtube videos on how to use it and have a good play with some scrap. Jointers are one of those machines that can cause a reasonably good board to end up in the trash.

It certainly sounds like a blade problem as your original post said that it was very noisy and lots of tearout which usually equates to blunt blades. Maybe if the blades weren't set level with each other the high one was doing all the work and is now blunt.

Igalic, I sent you a PM with my phone number.

Give me a call and we can talk about how I might be able to assist.

    Cheers

I got sick of sitting around doing nothing - so I took up meditation.
