Ryobi AP 13 Planer/Thicknesser.
Hi,
Would anyone have a parts list and/or more especially a wiring diagram for the Ryobi Thicknesser?
Thanks,
Bob H.

Thanks for the input but I still can't identify the part I need. Been to Bunnings locally and the "Special Orders' lady was very co-operative but needed a part number.
What I need to replace (so I'm told) is the "Motor Start Capacitor" - if that's the correct name for it. It is connected immediately behind the On/Off switch.
I'll attach a picture which might help. It's quite small about 25mm x 18mm.
Thanks,
Bob H.

Cos I don't know much about electrical stuff I would take the pics to my largest local electrical parts supplier. EG: in Vic Middendorps (Middy's)
If that didn't work I would go to power tool repairers - we have one in Heidelberg Rd Fairfield.
In other words start asking around.
Let us know how you go,

That is not a start capacitor, if that looks OK it will be OK.
Start capacitors are used on induction motors, IE brushless motors. Your motor is liable to have brushes. The purpose of the 3 capacitors shown is noise suppression, if these go short, it will blow a fuse. When open, the neighbours complain of the two great bars of dots showing up on their TV,
Correcting myself the 0.33uF may determine the rotational direction. In that instance it may run backwards or vibrate.

Thanks for more information.
Been to Bunnings, as I've mentioned, they will order in the part (whatever it's called) so long as I can give them a part number - which I can't. At Bunnings it was suggested that I go to the people who used to be Perth's main Ryobi repairer for either the part or the part number, they say they cannot supply either the part number nor the part as it would contravene some arrangement they have with Ryobi's owners and/or Bunnings but they will accept a job order from me to do the necessary repair!!!!! They won't accept a stripped down thicknesser only the whole machine - I'm trying to contain costs.
Thanks,
Bob H.
p.s. As suggested will take the picture around to see if it can be identified

What part are you actually after. If it is in the switch box, I doubt that would be supplied as a spare.. If you are sure that you know the part needed, give us what you want. Now that 0.33uF says its a double, has it 3 legs. The last one I helped with was a small German lathe. That he got substitute parts for by ordering from WES in Sydney (Wagner Electronics) but you would need to be able to fit them. An 0.33uF 275vVAC is about $2 but postage is about $10, the little blue ones are under $1 Anyways you didnt say what the motor actually does or why you certain that these are faulty . If that 0.33uF is faulty it would normally have a bulge and it looks OK to me.

Thanks rrbor, I'll get back to you if I can.
The thicknesser, Ryobi AP13, is 6 1/2 years old, been going fine, no problems when last used. Switched it on last Monday, there was a slight 'clunk' noise and nothing. Further attempts to switch on is a blank.
A friendly electrician offered to help. The brushes are OK and every thing goes moves/goes round, no smell of smoke and what can be seen of the armature segments appear OK. Some sort of meter probe moved the needle when first connected to this "yellow' part - which is immediately after the on/off switch - (sorry but I'm no electrician), from then on the probe shows nothing. On the basis of this (I think) I was asked to obtain a new "yellow" part. It has three leads and is quite small - 25mm x 19mm or so, the picture shows the printed details. whether or not the part is a 'motor start capacitor' or, as has been suggested, a radio/tv noise control I wouldn't know.
If it is a 'noise control' could it be bypassed - just for testing purposes?
Thanks for your help.
Bob H.
p.s. The thicknesser is for home use and has the ordinary household plug.

Im quite sure that this capacitor is not the fault. its a double point 33 micro Farad capacitor. If faulty it can do two things. If short, it will trip your mains or blow a fuse. If open the motor will hum or vibrate, get hot quickly and then blow the fuse. So sorry, look for something else, Id give you 10 to 1 odds on its not that. The cap will not be supplied as a spare part as Im sure it breeches some rule or other to supply that to the general public, so you are between a rock and a hard place.

Thanks conwood, will try there.
Bob H.
p.s. Ryobi are not at all customer friendly, at least with me. They will not supply a price for the whole motor assembly! (I'm asking them via Bunnings).Last edited by hawkinob; 17th February 2010 at 07:20 PM. Reason: Added the bit about Bunnings.

Hi there,
I digged out this old post in case if anybody would have found the cause to Bob's issue, as my AP13 seems to have failed the same way... No power on switch.. I have performed an impedance test between the pins of the plug with the switch turned on and my ohm meter is not moving under any scale. I'm deducing it might be a fuse, however I canot find any fuse slot to be seen from the outside. The circuits seems to be hard to access, so before I get my hands dirty i'd like to know if there could be anything I need to know from here.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I was unable to obtain any parts, not even the whole top section of the machine and ended up finding a place that repairs power tools.
Ended up costing $193.80 - not that I'm grizzling about that, just mentioning it. The invoice stated: full strip down and clean, replaced burnt out field and worn brushes, reassembled.
Labour charge was biggest part of cost ($120) which was why I was interested in buying the bits.
Done now.
Hope it might help.
