    Default SCM 2000D planer set-up

    Hi all,

I've recently bought an old SCM 2000D planer thicknesser combo machine. It's all in good nick, but looks like there might be some work on getting the planer-beds co-planar.

Going back to first principles, the SCM manual says to set the out-feed table 1mm above the cutter-block. At the moment there looks to be a slight variation in height from one end of the cutter-block to the other relative to the out-feed table. So I presume the best thing to do is shim the out-feed to be in alignment with the cutter-block, set the correct 1mm height on the out-feed, then shim the in-feed to be co-planar with the out-feed table.

Based on the weight of the machine, and the fact that every time you adjust a shim you have to unbolt the planer-bed etc. I thought I'd put it out there if anyone has gone through this process and has any advice, before I launch into what seems to be a notoriously frustrating process.

Also I'm thinking of buying a Veritas 965mm straight-edge (is this long enough to test for co-planar on a 2 meter long planer with feeler-guages?) and I'm looking for somewhere to buy fine shims in Melbourne (we have been using cut-up beer cans previously!)

    Any advice much appreciated

As long as the tables are aligned with each other, it doesn't matter if the cutter is slightly out; you'll take up any misalignment in the head when you set the knives level with the outfeed table. Side note, our cutterhead at work is out by 0.1mm over the 410mm width (helical head, so can't just adjust the knives) and it makes bugger all difference in practice.

Also, a 3' straightedge won't be enough for a 2m bed. Get a 2m length of heavy box-section aluminium (around 70 high x 30 wide x 3mm thick) from Bunnings, that stuff is straight enough as-is and is what the tech used to set ours initially.

EDIT: Just had a brain wave... You have a combo, therefore I'd think you need to set the knives in the head relative to the thicknesser table FIRST and then set the buzzer tables to the knives. If the thicknesser table is adjustable, disregard that.

Thanks Elan, as far as I can tell the thicknesser table is not adjustable, at least not easily. Hopefully the thicknesser table is aligned with the cutter head already (any adjustment to this looks like it could be a pain) As you mentioned, because the knives are set with a jig relative to the out-feed table I guess I should aim to get thicknesser bed aligned with the cutter-head, then the out-feed aligned with the cutter-head, so when the knives are set correctly for the planer they are also fine for the thicknesser. That aluminium sounds like a good idea too!
