    Default Shelix Helical Cutterhead

ok, i am ready to bite the bullet and get a helical cutterhead.

my thicknesser is a Dewalt DW735 model.
has anyone bought a helical cutter for this model?
if you dont mind me asking, how much can i expect to pay?
    did you install it yourself?
where can i get mine installed as i am useless at anything mechanical. (stick to wood butchering, i reckon!)

i paid $1400 for this thicknesser last year. i hope the cutterhead will be a major upgrade. maybe i am better off buying a jet or carbatec 15 inch thicknesser and investing in a cutterhead for that.

i am open to all suggestions.....

    regards, justin.

I do not know your machine, if you only paid $1400 for the machine you are in for a supprise the shelix is about $1700, and you can fit it yourself, personaly I think they are way over priced for the improvement that you get, unless you are proffesional cabinet maker/ or involved in some other fine woodworking venture where it will quickly pay for itself I think you could make better use of your money

Justin a 13” head is around $1100 -$1300 depending who you get it from and their installation charge. While they arnt hart to fit, you do need to know what you’re doing. It’s not really something to tackle yourself. Contry to what China said, the difference is breath taking. It’s the biggest improvement since the Domino in any workshop.

But I wouldn’t put it into the Dewalt. It’s a cracker of a machine, but being a brush motor, its noisy by nature, and that would negate the massive DB drop the Shelix brings. It really needs an induction motor machine. A 15” under mount would be ideal, but the more economical 16” top mount would still be awesome. Im getting the 8” for my Jet jointer in a few weeks and cant believe how excited I am.

Go for it, you will be blown away

thank you both for you honest replies.
i had my breath taken away at the brissy wood show in may this year. i was standing within 1 metre of a 20 inch carbatec thicknesser having a normal conversation (not shouting), while the sales rep fed a hardwood post through the machine. all you could hear was a gentle whisper!
and the finish was amazing. it was very impressive to see and hear this first hand.

as i work as a carpenter and will soon have my builders licence, i am happy to bite the bullet for the cutterhead. (tax deductable)

my biggest worry is spending big bucks on the shelix cutterhead and then having it installed in the wrong machine.

i am now certain the dewalt is the wrong machine for this upgrade and will look at upgrading soon!

lignum, could you steer me in the right direction?
    my budget is $4800. if i allow $1500 - $1800 for a cutter head for a 15 inch thicknesser.
which thicknesser or combi would you purchase for $3000 - $3300?

    regards, justin

I stand corrected, I based my answer on the quote for my own machine 13' durden, and the only one I have seen in actual use did not impress me that much, maybe I need to make some more inquiries

No probs China. It would be worth you revisiting the product .

A few weeks ago at the Alternative Wood Show here in Melbourne (at the Woodworking Warehouse) the 6” Jet jointer with Helical head, (the individual cutters still after two years of use were still on “number one”) was plaining the “end grain” of a 150mm x 125mm bit of the crapiest Messmate you could imagine. The grain was so tight and interlocked and full of gum it was good only for fire wood. Taking off 4mm, yes 4mm passes on the end grain leaving a silky smooth finish with no tear out at the end. Everyone who was watching was gob smacked. Amazing stuff.

Try and convince your neighbours it’s in their best interest for a more peaceful environment to chuck in a hundred bucks each towards the new head.

    hi mike.
thank you very much for this information.
this is the reason i use forums like these. you can throw out a question and get some great info in return.
how much for shipping to australia for the cutterhead?
if i could spend less than AU$600, i would consider buying this also.

thanks to lignum again too. i will be contacting wanita very soon and hope fully purchase a jet combi machine.

    regards, justin.

Default Anyone know which head for carbatec?

Just looking at the Holbren site (Planer - Holbren). Anyone know which head fits the 20" Carbatec thicknesser? I'm thinking about buying one and the availability and pricing of a shelix head will figure into my decision.

We manufacture spiral cutterheads. If you can give us the shaft sizes, we can make it to fit your machine. My email is [email protected].
