Best Thicknesser for carpenter
I ahve been asked by my builder for a suitable 12 inch thicknesser for occasional use in his work, mainly used for trimming studs, beading, and battens to size.
He has seen the Ryobi in Bunnings, the Makita ??, and also the Carbatec unit.
Can anyone please advise which one would be the most suitable?regards,
Dengy

Hello Jill,
If you mean a portable unit for the trailer I had a good run from a Ryobi "lunch box" machine. Over about 6 years of work in a 3 to 5 man gang I only twice replaced the chain drive and once a roller, parts were available in a couple of days. Still in use with another owner. Plus side, economical to buy, parts available, easy to service, small & light enough for site work, reliable. Minus, no weight so need to be secured for use, needs in/out feed rollers (dont they all) if working alone, no dust port, sometimes too small in width (rarely).
Regards, Bill.

You could look at the Makita 2012NB around $850.
Dust extraction hood is a rip off though, except from the US!

dont buy the hitachi we have had only had problems with it, might only get used once or twice a year on site as we have a 3ph 600mm wide machine in the shop but when ever we got to use it almost stops or something goes wrong

Thicknesser
I have the dewalt DW 735 It has 3 blades great extraction system and couldn't be happier with it. The DW 733 is probably a better unit for lugging around building sites. The 735 is about 30 kg so bit heavy to move around a lot. The dew alt has a large in feed base plate but could probabl do with a longer roller for the out feed. The blades are double sided the down side is that the brochure says that they are throw away items. I will let you know after I try and get my first set resharpened.
Total tools in south melboune do great deals.

I have a DW733 unit. Blades are resharpenable and fairly easy to remove and replace. Does a good finish but needs dust extraction (like all of them except the DW735). I'd agree with piquet's assessment. It is noisy (of course).
