Default thicknesser feed roller not contacting with timber

first time in 5 yrs had this issue where the feed roller is not making contact with boards when running longer timbers,

tried to lower feed roller height but had same issue, you have to push timber through by hand which is not the right way.

should i keep adjusting the feed roller down further or is it due to the long baords not feeding in level?

What brand of thicknesser? If the problem is only present on long timber that seems really odd. It might be that the longer timber having more mass can't be pulled through by the roller due to either adjustment or it is just too heavy for the machine and the roller is spinning its wheels so to speak.

I know this is stating the obvious but it's happened a couple of time to me so i'll put it out there. Is the gear box engaged properly?

I know with mine just a knock will disengage it.

    Cheers

I had a similar problem running lengths of brushbox. After numerous mechanical adjustments to blades and belts and pulleys and lots of fornication type swearing it turned out the problem was residue build up on the table. This increased the friction between the table and the timber resulting in the timber not feeding properly and getting 'stuck'. Sometimes the residue isn't really evident at first glance.

I cleaned the table back with solvent to dissolve the residue then gave it a coat of paraffin wax which really helps to lubricate the table. The paraffin wax is also called preserving wax (used to preserve homemade jams, pickles etc) and I found it in the cooking section of Coles supermarket for a couple of bucks. You could also use silverglide. Hope this helps.

    Hi Gazza,

Like twosheds has said, try cleaning and lubing the table.

I went through this VERY frustrating period too not so long ago. My thread is here, which may help you out: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f154/w...s-jams-131064/

the preserving wax does not cause trouble with paint finshes?

does make a bit of sense as the timber i was trying to run through was radita pine, i adjust the feed roller lower and ran through a length of blackbutt with out any trouble

The paraffin wax comes as a block and I just rub it over the tables until they are covered with a very fine film. It hasn't affected any of my finishes, what marks there are (and it doesn't leave many) seem to sand off the finished timber pretty easily. I use mainly feast watson and organoil finishes, can't really comment about others.

I came across the paraffin wax solution on some old threads on here, absolute gold mine of information if you have time to do a few searches.

I have used silver glide in the past, it's OK but now I just rub a candle on the table then quite vigourously rub it off, it's still there but more polished, works well

Major, are these numbers for a generic Taiwanese type thicknesser or for all thicknessers. Mine is very old and has no manual but has an adjustment for everything. It is an old commercial machine from a company no longer in existence. Thanks for taking the effort to make the info available even if it does not apply to mine.

I got these #'s from several sources (including American machines) so I think they are pretty generic.

I've used them on several Taiwanese & they seem to work very well. Have also used them on an old SCM thicknesser with the same result.

I hope they are of some use to you.
