    Default Thicknesser Repairs

    Hi All,

I'm upgrading this 20" thicknesser to a new Powermatic 15" thicknesser for my school. It's the same type as the Carbatec,Hafco 20" models with straight knives. It was bought before I started and came from Advanced Woodmachine Technologies (according to the sticker) and from what I can gather, they're not around anymore.

Because of the upgrade, we don't have a use for it and would like to sell it. A reason for the upgrade is due to having a few issues with it as well as having a machine that's easier to maintain and higher quality.

I've taken a video of it starting up - it has a rumbling, grinding sort of sound that is out of my league to identify. Our grounds keeper suggested it might be the bearings. This leads me to a couple of questions because if we manage to sell it, I'd like to be as honest as possible about what could need fixing.

Could it be the bearings or something else?
In it's current condition, what might this thing be worth?
Would it be worth fixing and then selling or pass it on with the known issues?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi lewisc,
It sounds like a bearing to me. There was someone who had the same problem on this forum a week or 2 ago. If it is just a bearing I would be in inclined to fix it before trying to sell it. Bearings are fairly cheap. Just my thoughts.

Bearings are cheap, but try to find a friendly engineering shop to press them on so they seat properly against the shoulder.

An easy way to check is to take the drive belts off and spin the head by hand. If it makes funny noises, bearing problem confirmed
