With four wires it's a bridge rectifier. Same recommendation as before just might be a couple of dollars more.

The test for the old one is that you connect a 12v battery to the wires that are connected to the switch and a bulb to the other two. The light should light for both battery polarities.

The extra earth wire is only used on a metal cased rectifier and these are not that common.

The rectifier should be mounted on a heatsink (the case) to keep it cool.

You may do better if you post up the circuit diagram as i suspect that what you have there is some sort of noise filter or suppression.
if it was a bridge rectifier then i would expect color coding to indicate the polatity, given the two blue and two brown wires i expect that it is active and neutral in and out, also supports the statement that this connects to the switch.
Confirm what it is before you wire a bridge rectifier in there otherwise your going to let the smoke out.

Thanks for that tip Bohdan, got it working YAAAAAHOOOOO. I'm pretty sure it was the circuit board and switch, I ended up using the bits from Leda, as I need to get it going. I hooked everything together, to test the system and the drive motor, away it went.
The only problem I have now, is I think Crowies little mate Handy, got into my shed and misplaced the gear that goes from the motor to drive the next set of gears.
Thanks everyone for their input, it has been most helpful.
