    Default 1632 Drum sander electrics

Wondering if anyone has had to replace any of the electrics in a Carbatec 1632 Drum sander? Where did you obtain the parts from?
I bought a used/abused drum sander that had stripped a couple of the gears inside the gearbox. I replaced them and now find the electrics don't work, not being electrically minded, wondering if there's a simple fix.
I was told it was only the gears that were stuffed, nothing was mentioned about the electrics apart from the thermal overload was by passed, as it was constantly popping out.
The previous owner used to take 3 mm cuts with 80 grit.
    TIA

If the motor was popping the thermal on a very regular basis, it has been getting seriously overloaded. If the thermal has been bypassed, it is quite likely that a motor winding, the centrifugal switch, capacitors or main on off switch are damaged by the overload. If you have had to replace gears because of broken teeth, then it really has been given a major overwork. I hope you got it for next to nothing because if you paid reasonable money for it, it may have been cheaper to buy a new one than rebuild this one.
I have no real experience with the unit you mention, but a fair bit with and around motors in general, so I cannot help with sourcing parts other than suggesting CTec or H&F if they have a companion model. However I am willing to try to help diagnose issues remotely if you have a multimeter and know how to use it safely.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

Thanks Mal. I have a multimeter somewhere in the mess I call a shed. I picked it up for $300. Looks like I might have dun my doe.

Found out part of the cause, the switch was faulty, which has been replaced, and the conveyor motor has a dead short in it, tripping the circuit breaker. Now to find the fault in the motor????

Looks like the circuit board could be faulty, one of the terminals that the belt drive motor wires hooks onto was loose, re soldered that, but still no current showing on the multimeter Ordering a new switch from Leda Machinery $15.80 plus Grab Snatch and Take, will see on Monday if they have the board?????

Is your drive motor a 90V DC unit? I have a Carbatec wide belt sander that had failed electronics and I got a replacement speed control board off Ebay for about $5 delivered.

Hi Bohdan, yes it is a 90V DC unit. Thanks for that info.. Now to find one. Do you remember the supplier??
    Thanks

    Try this link

6V-90V 15A Pulse Width PWM DC Motor Speed Controller LW | eBay

I also had to replace the transformer and rectifier that supplied the 90V as the motor or electronics had burnt it out.

Got a phone call and email from Adam at Leda Machinery, they can supply the box with all the electrics for $205 + GST, so I end up with all new electrics., plus new drive connectors.
Putting this up here, in case anyone else needs the electrics or any other components. This item is in stock as a spare part, but not listed as such.
    Thanks for the help.

Now to find rectifier (SK321D), so I can rectify the unit before I Wreck it!!!!!!!

What did you actually get and where did you get those numbers?

What is going to drive the rectifier?

So it wasn't quite "all" the electrics!

Good tip on that speed controller. Mine is a bit dicky.

    Hi Bohdan,
This is the kit that I bought today, consisting of the metal box (2 parts), the perforated panel that goes underneath, potentiometer, on/off switch, new drive dogs X 2, sander motor socket, circuit board, insulating board, bronze bush, all new fasteners, cable holders, and connectors, everything wired up ready to accept the cables and the elusive rectifier.
The part number for this kit was on the bag and invoice. Apparently a lot of businesses replace a section of the system, rather than a single part or item. Bit like having to buy a new alternator instead of just the diode.

The rectifier connects to the 2 white wires coming off the circuit board.
The part number for the rectifier is off the cover DSCF0378.jpg, well, I'm hoping it's the part number of the unit, and not the cover????
I've emailed Adam at Leda these photo's as he hasn't heard of a rectifier in the unit???? Checking the wiring diagrams, it doesn't show one

Woodpixel, is it the actual potentiometer that's playing up or the board? I ordered a board from China, then found the set up locally, yours if required?

If the rectifier only has two wires then it is only a diode. Any high voltage, high current power diode available from any electronics parts place would do.

I am saying high voltage (~300V), high current (10A) as they are only a couple of dollars more that the low value ones and would be almost bullet proof.

The only consideration is which way do you connect it. If you get it wrong the belt will run in the wrong direction.

BTW the original diode may be OK. Test it by connecting a 12V battery to a light bulb with the diode in one of the leads, reverse the battery connections. If good the light should light in one direction and go out in the other. If it lights both ways or not at all it's a dud.

It has 4 wires plus one to earth. A brown and blue go to the circuit board, and the other brown and blue go through a ferrite tube to the switches non active side.

The amazing thing is that neither Leda or Carbatec, knew that there was a rectifier in there. I can get a board from Carbatec $40.00, which appears to have a rectifier type box built into it????
Would still have to work out what goes where!!!! Decided to return the items from Leda, back to them, no point in keeping it if it isn't correct!!!
All this electrickery stuff is driving me nuts.
