Default 8 Inch Abbot and Ashby Bench grinder

    Hi all,

I have an A & A 8 inch bench grinder, and I want to improve its versatility. I have a grinding wheel on one (Left) end and a linisher/sanding disc on the other. My questions are:
Are guards available with a hole for an extension spindle, or is it OK to cut a hole, or just leave the plate off?
Are Non tapered extension spindles available, or alternatively (Ive never thought about it) are while wheels that screw on like a buffing wheel available?

    Thanks, Paul

That depends what wheel you are planning on using. All abrasive ceramic wheels should be fully guarded.
Scothcbrite and Wire wheels, and buffs can be left unguarded - I run my wire wheel with the side plate off but the guard on.
CBN and diamond wheels can also be left unguarded although a partial (top) guard is worth considering to protect these wheels from knocks.

I've tried using (home made) extensions and didn't like the way the wheels of the same side of the spindle would get in the way of each other - that's probably why I've ended up with 5 grinders
I do have have two wheels on the same side of the spindle (no extension needed) on my 3P variable speed grinder. This has a 6" flat diamond wheel on the outside of am 8" CBN wheel as the latter has no side abrasive surface.

are while wheels that screw on like a buffing wheel available?
I presume you mean wire? if so I've never seen one and given their weight it's probably not a good idea to mount a wire wheel that way.
Buffing wheels are low mass so if they are a little asymmetrical it does matter that much.

Buffing wheels should not be located anywhere near grinding wheels or they pick up grit which will mark buffing work. Buffing wheels will also catch fire if sparks from a grinder hit them - I have set two on fire that way - once they start they go up pretty quickly.

Thanks for the input Bob, I hadnt thought of some of those issues. Yep, wire wheels it was
I may end up with a second grinder or change wheels depending on task.
** Edit - should say I will only be using Aluminium Oxide wheels

    Cheers, Paul
