Default Advice needed - Belt/Disc Sander with Stand

I'm considering getting a decent Belt/Disc Sander to help me with boxes and other furniture I make.

There are a plethora of silly flimsy POC's from "car shops" and I'm not interested in those, but something with some mass and strength. Something with a 300mm disk and a decent belt - such as 1120x150mm.

I've survived until now with my homemade disk-on-a-lathe* and ROS, but a comish of 12 boxes made me a bit mental.

Does anyone have recommendations on what could be used frequently in a new "small biz"? **

    * Which I like.
** This is a dream, but I'm trying.

1120 mm is an odd size, maybe you mean 1220mm ?

The 1220 x 150 with the 12" disc is a fairly standard size available at most machinery places. Getting a sander with a standard belt size is a sensible approach because it can be a right PITA if they are not.

I looked at a range of sanders including the 1220 x 150 mm sizes about a year ago and fortunately procrastinated for long enough to be given a 1600 x 150 with a 12" disc that needed some work but it has turned out to be a very good machine, especially after adding variable speed capability.

One thing my machine doesn' have is an oscillating belt feature. Having spent some time using one a year or so ago I reckon they are a definite plus.

The other thing that these things do is make huge quantities of very fine dust and the dust extraction on all of them is usually poor so some modification is required. I have partially done this on mine but it still needs work.

Yes. A fat finger. 1220mm. Sorry!

A couple of the Canberra lads have already advised how they generate atomic quantities of dust and how unbelievably -poor they are at collecting it.

I'm angling towards the Jet JSG-96. It does not oscillate, but the next model does.

If anyone has one that's sitting unloved, send me an IM and we can negotiate a new home.

I've used one like this a fair bit

it wasn't a Jet though -- something much older and industrial

Highly recommend the horizontal table and oscillation.
Not sure that variable speed is all that helpful.

    Dust collection:
you need to get really serious.
The one I've used was attached to a 10" duct and with a full scale industrial DC at the other end.
You could see laminar air flow along the belt as the DC pulled the dust away.

I thought this looked like and interesting buy:

A bit of a drive unfortunately. Team it up with a standalone disc sander and it could be a good buy.

I wouldn't call it top priority by any means because we can usually learn to work within limitations but the more I use mine the more I like it.

Machines designed for the 60Hz market run 20% faster compared to when used on 50Hz power and I seriously doubt they change the drum diameters to compensate because then they would have to change all the cowlings and guards. As a result much of our machinery is not running at the original specification. Variable speed control can take that into account.

The other way that it can be used is for fine sanding control. Usually this is done by adjusting pressure but additional control can be obtained by also slowing the belt down.

The other time I find it really useful is when changing belts. I usually sort the belt tracking out at low speeds (e.g. 5Hz) before cranking it up to higher speeds.

Last but not least is metal work where much higher belt speeds can be used.

    Default disc/belt

Have seen many combinations-home made & from the shop- Disk is a piece of to make-but must form disk after it is running-treat it like a lathe-my current is about 12'' also driving an old homemade linisher 4" x about 48"-could easily take 4 1/2 "belts but the length is obscure -recommend building to a standard size. Mine has aluminium rollers, but have seen wooden rollers working quite well. By the way 1/2 hp moter has all the power that I need. Unless you ONLY do light work-would not recommend less-Go 6" belt ,well mabee more- Same with disk-16-18"think about more grunt, but 1/2 horse does what I described with only a minour slow down on heavy pressure on the belt-the disk tends to burn when pushed rather than slow-depends on the grit with either.
