My air compressor might need new valves? Where to get? What to do? Help...
My compressor is a 3 phase unit, twin cylinder. It runs perfect, builds up pressure etc no problems. But when running if I put my hand over the intake port/s I can feel back pressure. I can feel little pulses of air coming back out. Not much but it's there.
So I have taken the heads off. I see the reed valves which are just a strip of springy metal by the looks. How do I know that they are good or bad etc.
I think that the compressor may be able to run better, but as it is old I do not know what it was like new.
And I can't get parts arrgh. It's a Consolidated Pneumatic CP5 5.5hp, I don't know the cfm.
Here are some pics. Are the reed valve shot? and where can I get new ones?

Inevitable
I think you'll find a hint of blowback is standard for reed valves.
They are slow to react due to their mass, and the piston will start it's compression stroke before they close fully.
If it's working right, leave it alone.

Hmm yeah I had thought that too. I might just give them a good clean and cut some new gaskets as there was a break one of the gaskets.
I do not know it the break in the gasket was because of me pulling it off or if it was always there..

god I would never take mine apart, she's that old that the metal would crumble in my hands, she takes a good ten minutes to fill up the tank, supposedly 10 cfm but I think she may push 8 on a good day, like me shes old and cranky but I would never get rid of or pull her to pieces, she's got all sorts of problems but then so have I, we've grown accustomed to each other
G'day I'm Dave!

In addition to response time issues, there will be a column of air moving through the intake system in a wave at the time when the valve closed. This air will collide with the valve and be bounced back to the filter. I would not expect it to bounce through the filter however.
