Thread: Altering Drill Press From Bench to Standing

I have a bench drill press mounted on a small rolling bench. It takes up much the same space (OK, it actually takes up more space but you would have to have a least as much free space, if not more, around a floor mounted DP) as a floor mounted drill press but is a lot more versatile for me. Good for the space deficient......and really good if you can't seem to make up your mind where everything should go from one week to the next.

Turn it upside down and attach it to the ceiling.
Then you have it out of the way and an unlimmitted throat.
You can drill a hole in the centre of a 2.4 x 1.2 sheet if needed.
All you need is a small moveable bench under it to hold the work being drilled.

Probably a bit too left field but I have seen it done in a patternshop years ago.

Gotta tell ya, as far as crazy ideas go, I like that one. I'll file that one away for when I build the shed. ...One day.....


I welded up a mobile stand for a bench top Waldown drill to get it off the bench and it works fine. Floor space and working height were optimised before stability, so I need to be careful if I roll it around, but that's fine by me. The overall workshop footprint is no greater than that of the drill and the machine is up high enough for me to use comfortably. I'm quite happy with how it turned out.
