Autolux drillpress
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to reassemble this old drill press and I'm unable to get the spring that returns the quill to work.
The spring in this machine doesn't fit into a cover that is then attached to the press, rather in fits onto the casting
and then has a part with a slot in it that tensions the spring, with a nut that holds it in place. I hope the pics make my dodgy description a bit clearer.
When I fit the cover I can tension the spring and lock it with the nut, but this just locks the quill.
Has anyone any idea how to make this work ?
Cheers,

I think that the nut is a quill lock, don't tighten it and see if it will work.

Try over at the Metal work forum, some is always playing with a drill press in pieces there.

Don’t know if this is any help or not but one of our old drill presses where I used to work has a spring set up similar to yours. The nut on the centre shaft was an acorn nut which turned as the quill moved. The design of an acorn nut would prevent it being tightened to a point that would lock the shaft to the cover.

Thanks guys, I'll take your suggestions onboard and have another go tomorrow
Lappa I think your onto something there, I briefly got it to work yesterday but couldn't work out why, I think I must have temporarily got the correct amount of tension via the nut( which isnt the acorn type. Thanks again.

There should be 2 nuts on there which lock together. Tighten up the inner one enough so that everything is firm but still moves easily. Keep a spanner on it while you tighten the second nut against it. If the first nut is tightened too much it will all just lock up.

You could use a single Nyloc nut also, that would be easier to set rather than using two. Interestingly I came across this yesterday showing how to do it on a Nova. Go to about 13:30 to see the spring installation because for some reason this forum does not like posting an url at the specific time.

Did you get it to work? I just finished putting my drill press back together which has the same spring mechanism as yours. I can walk you through it if you need. Cheers, Zac.
