Behrens Homeshop Saw/Jointer
Hi All
I've seen some old threads relating to the Homeshop, and have joined a couple of the threads, but have yet to see any responses.
In the hope of getting a response from someone who has a good knowledge of these machines, I've posted this new thread.
I have just acquired one of these machines, and am in the process of getting it working. However, I need some help with the jointer blades, which were very badly damaged. Having had them resharpened, I now find they are too short to be held by the fasteners, and still protrude far enough to reach the outfeed table. Also, looking at the internet, I can't find any knives tall enough to 'sit' in the bottom of the holder slot and protrude far enough to cut timber. Can anyone help?

For the 2nd issue maybe get or make a jig with 3 magnets. One for out feed one for blade and one on the end of an adjustable bolt for infeed table. Thus holding the blades at the correct height while you fix them in place.
As for the first problem, maybe it's missing a part between the fasteners and the blades?

Thanks for the response Dave. I've seen the jig you've mentioned on Youtube. However, on the Homeshop both infeed and outfeed tables can be adjusted for height. So theoretically, once each blade is set at the same height, the tables can be adjusted accordingly.
However, for each knife to be able to 'sit' at the bottom of each groove and also protrude far enough to engage timber, they need to be around 45mm tall. If they are lifted clear of the bottom of the slot, the very minimum they can be, to ensure safe engagement with the securing screws, is about 35mm. I can't find any of this size on the internet.

Pure speculation on my part but perhaps the original had metal pads with a rabbet to seat each blade at a minimum height and to help keep the blade level?
Sorry I'm not much help. Perhaps someone knowledgeable will chip in.

I have two machines here that are waiting to be picked up by new owners, I have had a quick look and there appears to be some sort of spacer in the slot, tomorrow I will remove one of the knives and let you know what I find

Hi Lumo, There is no spacer simply relies on clamping force of the bolts, knife just sits in slot and is clamped in position knife is 22mm, I assume it started out at 25mmHabco 1.jpgHabco 2.jpg

Take 2 with Attachment
Thanks for the photos China, but I'm still struggling to understand how a 22mm knife can be held safely by the securing screws. I've attached photo hopefully showing what I mean. I have assumed that at least 1mm of knife needs to protrude above the barrel to perform cutting. As you can see even with a 25mm knife the area left to hold is minimal and probably dangerous

Take 3
Sorry China, still trying to work out how to get the attachments loaded. I keep getting the quick reply option.
I've added the photos I took. At 22mm there is virtually nothing to hold on to, at 25mm less than half a hole, and it requires a 30mm knife to achieve full engagement with the securing screws. Am I doing something wrong?

The knife is not secured by the bolts, the knife sits above the bolts and the bolts close the slot onto the knife pretty much only the bevel on the knife is proud of the cutter block re the danger aspect I have used these machines extensively and never encountered a problem, I also used one every day for the first two years of my apprenticeship again never a problem

Thanks for that China, I'll have another look at it tomorrow, as at the moment I can't see how the screws will reduce the width of the slot.

Hi China, all set up and cutting really well. Is there a recognised method for setting the blades? I 'nipped' each one in it's slot and then tapped it down flush with the out feed table.
i've also found that there is a small discrepancy across the tables, can they be adjusted so they are exactly co-planer?
