    Default Belt and disc sander?

Hello, sorry if this has been discussed before but has anyone got one of these, and are they ok? I'm only using it for small sanding jobs etc.

L109 | L-612A Belt & Disc Linisher Sander | For Sale Sydney Brisbane Melbourne Perth | Buy Workshop Equipment & Machinery online at machineryhouse.com.au

I liked the idea it had a 1.5hp motor (bit of grunt), does anyone know of other places that sell the same, I did a google but couldn't find much.

    Is that price reasonable?

    Regards
    Stevo

We have 2 of these units at our woodclub - https://www.carbatec.com.au/sanding-...-60kg-74-43-45

The disc is a bit smaller, and so is the price. One of ours is from Carbatec, the other from Hare & Forbes, and are essentially the same machine.

When buying a machine similar to these, you must check that the alignment or adjustability of the table slot can be made parallel with the surface of the disc and that it can adjusted to be square to the disc. On both of our machines the casting of the bracket which the table pivots on has been drilled out of square and there is no way of setting the table parallel.

With a lot of fiddling about you could make an auxiliary table to attach to the original, but would lose a bit of usable disc diameter.

Having said the above, these machines are very useful, especially for toy making in our club.
Belts and discs are standard sizes and readily available. Dust collection is a must, they are very efficient at removing timber and errant finger nails.

    Hope this helps,

    Alan...

I can attest to this feature from personal experience, thankfully only to the severe manicure stage! Mine doesn't have the tilting belt feature and I doubt that I've really missed it. Not sure what you think you need 1.5 HP for, mine is 1HP and is more than capable of throwing timber all over the shop. Picked it up at Gasweld a few years ago when they had them on special for $299. Almost certainly not the best model around, but it fulfills my needs.

I have access to one (Carbatec) at the Day Centre where I help out. Finding it very useful for sanding large and small items. On of the first things I'd do, is modify both the dust outlets, they are way to small. Very fiddly to set up parallel and square, we don't bother about that there, as a bump is enough to take it out of alignment. Some of the Clients and Volunteers are a bit "carefree" it's not their tools, so they don't have to worry about it.

Just make sure what you buy has a motor speed of 1420 rpm.
The local clowns were selling 2800 rpm units in these and disc sanders.
They are too fast and burn the wood once the edge is off the new paper.
Get a crepe rubber cleaning stick it will double the life of the paper.
We used to use old desert boot soles but you'd be battling to find a pair nowadaze.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, I will ring H/F and ask about adjusting the setup for Parallel and square and the speed is 1420rpm, I have a crepe cleaning stick so that was great advice.

looked on gasweld and found this, one side could be medium the other fine paper.

Looks like they copied the U.S. info verbatim as 1750 rpm is the lower speed over there.
That is a great idea having twin discs but I think it not only has the die cast tables but Al discs.
We bought a single disc thru a rep a few years back for the uni I was working for.
I specified cast iron table and disc and the rep who could make better profit on it supplied a machine with die cast and Al.
I rejected it and bought for the same price myself one with cast iron from the WA mob, Even with transport it was competitive.
This was for an engineering workshop so if there were any problems with disc wobble or table alignment we had something to work on.
With die cast you can maybe bend it or epoxy on stuff but forget about welding or machining it.
Fortunately Linishal was still in business so we could buy an Aus built quality linisher.
These replaced a Chinese disc and belt combo which was knackered after a few years use.

    Hi Alan

I have had the smaller 9" diameter and 1hp Carbatec machine for about or more 15 years. It has been very reliable (touch wood). I bought it originally for sharpening blades, but over the years (having stopped using it for that purpose) I would use the disk sander much of the time, and the belt sander infrequently. Your use will no doubt be different to mine since I mostly use hand tools.

I found the disk very useful (still do) and many a time wished that it was 12" rather than 9". I also found that I could bog down the 1hp motor (perhaps it is 3/4?), and wished for more hp. In short, if I was buying again for my current use, I'd just get a large disk sander. In your case, the larger disk-belt sander would be preferred.

    Regards from Perth

Perhaps the machines referred to were meant for metalworking rather than wood. That would explain the 2800 rpm motors, also the rating of 1.5 hp. I have one of these machines originally fitted with a 3/4 hp 1400 rpm motor, and it performs reasonably well with timber. I doubt that a 1.5hp 1400 rpm motor would fit in the available space. The machine is too slow for effective metalworking, but would be transformed if fitted with a 1.5hp 2800 motor.
