Thread: Belt/Disc Sander

I have the Ryobi one ,missus bought it for me for Christmas last year .
So far it has been good and gets used a lot.It's supposed to have bush type bearings in one end of the belt sander , I tried to lubricate as the manual saya ,but instead it has sealed ball bearings.
I bought the velcro mounted discs to add to the disc sander part , but haven't installed as yet.
The mitre gauge thah comes with it is a bit wanting and the table that sits in front of the disc needs some fine adjust ment to get it square with the disc.
It also converts to a vertical sander .
I am in the process of making Dereks' plane blade sharpening jig to sit on top of it.The bed for the sanding belt is quite solid being made from 3mm steel and has no flex in it.

A bit more info would be good.

I bought one of these from H&f and It's done all that I want. The only thing is the bearings went in the belt part after about 10 hours. H&F replaced them no questions asked. They probably would have replaced the machine, but I had already removed the bearings and I would have had to pay the freight. I live 1400km from the nearest shop so bearing replacement was the best option.

Other than that, the machine is solid and square. Well worth the money.

Thanks for the reply!! I did have an old GMC, which died out recently. I was kind of happy that it did as well due to the spindle runout. I do use sander for making children's toys as well as for other woodworking purposes. Some one recomended Jet 96, which costs more than $600, and I am not sure if it is worth the money. Haffco seems to be a good option as well. I'll look into it.

Gasweld do a Chinese one for about $390,not a bad unit got one myself

I have the same one as Robert. It has been great - hammered it for a couple of years now and it just keeps on going without missing a beat. 3/4 hp and a 6" wide belt, cast iron construction.

Thanks for the feedback. I have decided to go for the H&F as well. Have you had any problem with the 3/4hp? Is it worth going for a more powerful machine?

The 3/4 hp is plenty power. I grind metal on mine as well as wood. Really given it the stick over the couple of years I have had it. Never given an inkling of worry (better touch some wood now!).
