Carbatec Drum Sander Problems
Hoping someone might be able to help me with this problem. The pictures attached are of the gearbox and two of the cogs that have failed. The gearbox is mounted on the front of the conveyor belt drive motor on my Carbatec 16/32 drum sander. Not surprisingly the belt stopped turning. The motor still works fine.
Before anybody takes me to task over this damage I'd offer in mitigation that the machine was purchased second hand; the previous owner had burned out and replaced the drum drive motor; his constant advice to 'not ask for too much' when I picked the machine up, along with the aforementioned, would seem to indicate that he regularly did ask for too much. I suspect I'm suffering from the delayed consequences of previous misuse, I've never asked much of the machine, it's a sander not a thicknesser.
I've had a bit of a search on the web for some replacement parts without much luck. I can source a motor from China for $65 or a motor and gearbox complete locally for around $450 , but I can't find any suitable gears or a motor and gearbox at a sane price and the gears are really all I need. The compound gear is made up of two gears pressed together and I could get by with just the smaller gear if necessary.
I'm planning on trying some of the local bearing and engineering supplies places locally next week, but has anybody got any ideas where I might source the necessary parts? There's no branding, part numbers etc. on the gearbox or any of the gears.

Maybe flick a message to AlexS as he was having a vibration issue and was mucking around with the motor/drum coupling. He may have his disassembled and be able to check his for you.

Might be over kill, but maybe these guys can steer you in the right path to find them. Surely they would be a standard size. https://ronsongears.com.au/

Grizzly in the US can usually supply stuff like this Dave. I doubt you are going to find off the shelf gears from a bearing supplier and you do need both as the small one will have a wear pattern in it. If all else fails get back to me as my Brother-in-Law is a tool maker.

Thanks Chris, I'll keep that in mind. Dayton in the US supply these motors with what appears to be the same gear casing in a variety of speeds. Just have to check/calculate the ratio to make sure the right one is ordered. And come up with the US$230 odd of course. I might contact them to see if they can supply the gears I need.

A friend has one of these sanders and managed to burn out the motor quite some time ago. Given the high cost of a replacement motor he came across a gearmotor commonly used in BBQ rotisseries but had to fit it to the other side of the drive belt. This prevents using the open end of the sander to machine boards wider than 16" but this is not an issue for him.
The biggest problem with these machines is that people try to use them as a thicknesser, causing all sorts of problems. Fitting an amp meter and keeping the feed rate so that no more than 3 amps total current is drawn is a good way to monitor proceedings.
Hope this helps in some way.

About this time last year, I too bought a second hand unit, I know it was abused as a thicknesser. I managed to get the parts from Leda Machinery, they're made in the same factory with different color schemes.
Have attached a link to the operating manual including parts listing, incase you didn't get one with it.

Can't remember what the prices were, but affordable.

Hey Aldav, I think I may have one of those in my scrap metal bin. I will check it out in the morning and let you know tomorrow evening.

Could be worth a try Just George, but I suspect they would want to sell me a motor and gearbox at the aforementioned horrific price - about half the price of a new complete machine. Perhaps I'm too cynical?

sorry for trying to help, I hope the one you get from China is the right size and fits. If it isn't try sending it back.

Here are the gears from the one I have, looks the same except the single gear does not have the boss like yours so you may need to make up a spacer.
If you want them PM me your name and address and I will send them tomorrow.

Crocy.

Don't take offence where none was intended Just George, I took your suggestion quite seriously and will be following up on it today, but I won't be holding my breath for the hoped for response. I can't source a gearbox from China only a bare motor. The only reason I mentioned it in my initial post was to provide a contrast between the cost of a bare motor from China, cost of a motor and gearbox from the US and the cost of a motor and gearbox locally. At this stage I don't intend to purchase a replacement from China, but I wouldn't have any qualms about doing so.

Old Croc you're a legend. That looks like it will be a perfect fit, right number of teeth on the cogs and in very significantly better condition than my clapped out examples. PM on the way.
