Default Cheap Ryobi Drill Press - repair or replace ?

    Hi All,

Allow me to regale you with my tale of woe (and stupidity).

About 10 years ago I bought a Ryobi EDP2521L Drill Press. It's a cheap ~250w unit from bunnings. There was no manual in the box. I was a bit mystified at how the chuck is supposed to connect to the spindle. It seemed to stay on the spindle if I just shoved it on, but then it fell off and hit the concrete floor. Not to be discouraged I slipped the chuck back on, held a block of wood under it, and hit the wood a couple times with a mallet.

I'm sure none of you will be surprised to learn that this drill has had a terrible "wobble" since day one. The problem is I don't really know whether I bent one of the "fingers" in the chuck when it hit the deck, or if I bent the spindle when I hit the thing with a mallet.

As a result I've never really used this press but it's time I dealt with it I guess.

Problem is that now, 10 years on, the only place I can find a replacement chuck is here, and at $95 (incl shipping & "insurance") it feels like a gouge given that the unit only cost me $180 back in the day.

If I were certain that a new chuck would fully & finally resolve the matter then that would be my best option, but of course I can't be sure that the problem isn't the spindle.

I think that in writing this out I've pretty much convinced myself to buy a new press (or find one on gumtree), but I'll post anyway just to see if anyone has any thoughts.

I would say that sometimes the chuck is put on on a slight angle which gives your problem, you could try taking it off and replacing it in a different position/s, if that doesn't work a new DECENT chuck would be the order of the day.
Ryobi tools I've found to be of a lot lower quality, a lot of the parts are made in different smaller factories, where QC is unknown, and assembled in one place then branded according to purchaser.

I had assumed that I needed a chuck specifically designed for this model. Any idea how I might find other compatible chucks?

    Thanks so much for this.

Re: cheap + old = replace.. a fair comment. I could afford a replacement but my low usage rate justifies at least an attempt at frugality.

Is the chuck coming off the spindle and leaving a hole inside the chuck? If it is, the taper inside the chuck is usually a Jacobs taper designated as JT and a number. This type of chuck is readily available and much cheaper here if you wanted to go down that path. When fitting either the morse taper or the Jacobs taper you need to ensure that both surfaces are completely free of any dirt or lube. If the manufacturing process did not create 2 tapers (male & female) that matched each other perfectly they will not hold. Unless they used soft steel to machine their taper from it is unlikely that the spindle has bent as most of them are hardened and very strong, but it is hard to see that anything could bend on the chuck either.
If you took the chuck back off and ran the drill you should be able to see if the arbor is bent on the end.
