Backing cloth for a belt sander.
Look at making a belt sander and checking out what is available as a low friction backing material for the belt to ride on.
I found a carbon fibre cloth on-line store and asked them what they had.
This was their reply
Carbon fibre cloth cannot be used in this application as it is extremely weak and brittle as a raw product (prior to being set in resin).
However, aramid may be suitable as it is extremely durable in its raw state.

The standard approach (other than a piece of sheetmetal) is a graphite impregnated pad which has adhesive on the back side to stick to aformentioned sheetmetal. Have seen them advertised/listed but cannot think where at the moment.
Raw carbon fibre is very brittle as suggested, and basicly useless until bonded into a resin. Think along the lines of steel reo and concrete, one is good in compression, the other in tension, individually both fairly useless, in combination, they can do good things.I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.

What about bonding the CF in some high temp resin of some kind?
Maybe one that has some metal particles embedded in it as well?
